Hello Whitebird here again- Season's Greetings to all fans. I was asked about having more than one ship yesterday. On second thought it would be cool to use the traveling function to navigate the waters as well and run into friendly and unfriendly ships for trade and war. Imagine mutiny on the Bounty on the way to Caladon. Whoever can't cut it walks the plank or shut his mouth. There isn't any ship that can't be sunk and that includes the Gypsy. Giant magical squids, leviathons, and a whole host of pirates like Pete's gang would be interesting. I'm not a programmer but it shouldn't be no step for a stepper! So how bout it fellas? Anyone up for sea salt?
or it would be an astoundingly small part of the game that most people would see it as just another annoying random encounter that introduces nothing new
However it could be really neat as well. Imagine being on route from Blackroot ot Tarant when you encounter a giant Kraken! You could blow it to pieces with roundshot (for technologists), or fry it with magical spells projectors (for mages). And you could make a fortune trading or just explore (and possibly discover new lands to save and/or pillage).
good idea for part 2  but as Amos Trask said it can olso be an annoying random encouter thing:-x
It would just make the game larger. The annoyance factor Trask talked about only applies if the thing is too frequent, just as the normal random encounters. When you meet a zillion wolves any time you try to travel it gets on your nerves. They could just make those sea encounters rare but possible. That way you wouldn't get so annoyed.
Maybe you could choose your mode of sailing when setting out. Like, if you were a trader you could opt for a fast journey without many goods on board and a 20% chance of a random encounter along the way, or a slower trip, carrying alot of goods but a 70% chance of having more than one random encounter. Or if you were a warrior and decided to go pirate hunting (or a pirate who wanted to go merchant hunting), you could select this option as well with a 100% chance of meeting something. What do you all think?
If the random encounters are well scaled, happen with taseful frequency, have a balanced level of profitability for your characters, and are varied enough, and a better combat system makes battles more stimulating, there won't be a problem, wheter or not there are sea battles.
