There is a shipbuilder in Blackroot... is he there just to tantalize and annoy? Or can I eventually buy a boat from him? He keeps telling me to come back later, and I tell him it is later, but he doesn't listen! :)

At some point, you need to get to Thanatos. There are several ways of getting a ship. One of them is the Stringy Pete Quest, another is being a master gambler, and another is simply to buy one of said people for 50,000 GP.

Thanks! Now... how do I get the Stringy Pete quest? I saw him mentioned in the newspaper once, but haven't found anything about him elsewhere. And is that a good or an evil quest?

That comes when you need to find Nasrudin's final resting place. It can be forced.

That depends on how you do it.

I'm not sure about the newspaper, but Edward Teach will talk about Stringy Pete, and Pete's ship is the one north of Ashbury I think....

    Re: in te newspaper

It was in the Tarantian (as far as I know, the only newspaper in the game), and it was the article about pirate attacks. The paper said some sailor or other was attributing the attacks to Stringy Pete, but the reporter figured he was a loon, since Stringy Pete was long dead.

And pirate raids. Whenever you take a boat there should be a chance of a pirate raid. Graphics, two boats lashed toghther. Tougher than the Hand.

:-o I never knew that. I've only ever used a boat twice, and that was to get to Caladon before I knew about the Lethe Wyvern crossing.

Yet again, a little something I've missed out on. I'll have to try that when I next install Arcanum.

BTW, does it do anything? Like, do you lose money, items, or have to fight things? Or is it simply an added cutscene?

Ahhh. Dang, that combined with the newspaper article about pirate attacks and the ship captains talking about the dangers of the high seas really got my hopes up.

It's a pity. Repelling boarders is always fun. :)

Got my hopes up too. I had the game for a few months before I realized there just were not going to be pirate battles. :(

Hmm... I'm currently a master gambler and a master haggler, and I have 50,000 gold... and the bloody twit still won't sell to me! What am I doing wrong?

Are you at the moment you need to go to Thanatos? That could be the problem... he'll just sell it to you when you need to go to Thanatos... ah, if you're a master haggler you can get it by 25,000... of course then give the dude a time bomb and pick up your money again.

But if you're master gambler (I don't know how you beat that dwarf! I lost all my money gambling with him!) just gamble with Killian Drake and you'll get the ship for free. :)

Ahh, no, I don't have to go to Thanatos yet. I just wanted to tool around the high seas of Arcanum in my own boat. Drat.

As for the dwarf, I just had lots of money to lose. :) It cost me about 20,000 gold for the master gambler title... and I haven't gotten a dratted thing out of it, either. If I beat someone at gambling, they hate me.

Oh well, at least I'm playing a technologist, so all I had to do to get back the 20 grand was make ten sets of eye gear. :)

Eye gear? You make eye gear for sale? Who do you sell it to? Its an interesting idea because I was usually selling grenades and I don't really need them for anything other then money making...

The junk dealer, or with Expert haggle, the inventor's shop gives top dollar. Try the thieves guild for granades.
