The level cap absolutely ruined the game for me...

Yes, I played with a warez version. I will buy the game when it comes out just because that is my policy if I actually play a game for more than one evening. I played for several evenings, until I hit level fifty, then I uninstalled the game, nowhere near finished.

Don't get me wrong, this was a good game, as long as you don't mind playing through two thirds of it with a static, absolutely unchanging character and not being able to explore all the various disciplines. (Sure, you could play through it again with different characters but frankly, many of us have other things to do with our time.)

I understand why game designers put level caps in their games, it makes it easier to keep the game challenging for the player. My retort is that the challenge is quite irrelevant if the player stops playing because they don't feel like spending the next two weeks adventuring with a character that does not progress!

Plus, balancing your game by way of a level cap is frankly a cop out by the designers. It is nothing less than a failure of the imagination. Don't tell me that the best RPG design group in the world today couldn't come up with a better way to balance their game than with a level cap. Lame, very lame, and I feel cheated.

I'll buy the game but with a very sour taste in my mouth when I do.

I didn't reach the level cap until I was fairly close to the end, and I did a lot of side quests. That was in the press beta. For the final, the balancing has been changed so that advancement is slower. So...

    No worries.

Imagine the game without the leve cap for just a few moments...
Imagine then your level 88 character running into the nasty 50 level slayer-critter, the highest level opponent you'll face...
Imagine then how the game will bore you to death, because everything is simply too easy.
The level cap is also there to keep the game balanced in the respect that you will never get a higher level than the highest level opponent you'll ever face in the game.
Remove the level cap, and monsters/NPCs ought to level up just as you do. That would take a heck more programming to do right, than a simple level cap does.
And remember that Troika is only so big. I can imagine that they're not entirely happy with the level cap either, but with the manpower available to them, they really had no choice as far as I can see..

And this post shouldn't be seen as an attempt to get everyone involved in the discussion. It's just how I see things. Unhappy as they may be.

    ...

also when you get too high, every character will more or less be the same

and add the fact that if they want to make an expansion they want you to never go past a certain level, so that they can fit your character into the continuation of the game.

and, as calis say the press preview that is out warzed is not balanced right, and you level up quicker then in the final.

personally i'm probably going to play on hard, and that will give you less XP, and make it even harder to level up *g*

Here here monkey, and to top it off, what about playing as diff races hrrm? There are gonna be alot of races and alot of different ways to play, so a level cap in my mind doesn't matter

yeah, and well as written the game wasn't balanced back then.

and don't play on easy if you fear the level cap, it will bring you right into it.

I dunno, I really think the level cap should be higher. If you can hit the level cap before completing the game, there's a problem with the balance.

Look at Fallout and Fallout 2. The level cap was 99th level, yet most people finish Fallout at around level 13 or so and Fallout 2 around level 26.

I agree that the cap ruins the game when you don't know about it, if you do you can adjust your gameplay style to be a specialist and that is what the makers had in mind. In every rpg game I think there is a curse of underexperience, you have to go up against foes who are 10 times better than you witch makes the games formidably hard (Baldur's Gate TOB) especially the bosses. I you would reach level 99 what type of a challange would the end of the game be then? Imagine killing Frank(the boss Fallout2) at level 99.. he would be nothing more than a breeze. So we have a cap, at 50 because not everyone has the time to attain level 100. to acually hurt the last boss, he has to be lower. the normal game time cannot be a year in order to reach him. V!

    anyone seen aldin lately?

Also don't let's forget about the difficutly levels.
Dollars to doughnuts Widgetmite was playing on Easy difficulty, which awards 1.5X experience points. He almost certainly trolled for random encounters (nothing wrong with that, btw, I probably will do that myself). He probably also hogged the XP by not having followers or the like. Combine the three and it'd be pretty easy to hit the cap early.
So, if you don't want to hit the cap too early, don't play on Easy and try to limit your trolling and bring along some followers!
