    The beggar is female.

    It doesn't say that the dead guy had no sisters...

    Ferret is correct it is wave/waves.

    Next one:
    There is one that has a head without an eye,
    And there's one that has an eye without a head.
    You may find the answer if you try;
    And when all is said,
    Half the answer hangs upon a thread.

    The answer is needle.

    You've got knitting needles with a head/no eye, and sewing needles with and eye/no head. The sewing needles can be hung on a thread. An the answer is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

    Correct, rather long riddle next:

    'Twas whispered in Heaven, 'twas muttered in hell,
    And echo caught faintly the sound as it fell;
    On the confines of earth 'twas permitted to rest,
    And in the depths of the ocean its presence confes'd;
    'Twill be found in the sphere when 'tis riven asunder,
    Be seen in the lightning and heard in the thunder;
    'Twas allotted to man with his earliest breath,
    Attends him at birth and awaits him at death,
    Presides o'er his happiness, honor and health,
    Is the prop of his house, and the end of his wealth.
    In the heaps of the miser 'tis hoarded with care,
    But is sure to be lost on his prodigal heir;
    It begins every hope, every wish it must bound,
    With the husbandman toils, and with monarchs is crowned;
    Without it the soldier and seaman may roam,
    But woe to the wretch who expels it from home!
    In the whispers of conscience its voice will be found,
    Nor e'er in the whirlwind of passion be drowned;
    'Twill soften the heart; but though deaf be the ear,
    It will make him acutely and instantly hear.
    Set in shade, let it rest like a delicate flower;
    Ah! Breathe on it softly, it dies in an hour.

    :eek:

    That's a tough one if I ever saw one. The only thing I can think of is 'Existence', but then maybe my mind isn't quite in gear yet....

    I was thinking "reason" or "colour" but they both only fit a few.

    Letter H it is, easy one for next:

    At the sound of me,
    men may dream
    Or stamp their feet.
    At the sound of me,
    women may laugh
    Or sometimes weep

    A baby crying or just a voice? Someone's voice, depending on what that voice says?

    Music is the correct answer. Another one:

    Oft I must strive with wind and wave,
    Battle them both when under the sea
    I feel out the bottom, a foreign land.
    In lying still I am strong in the strife;
    If I fail in that they are stronger than I,
    And wrenching me loose, soon put me to rout.
    They wish to capture what I must keep.
    I can master them both if my grip holds out,
    If the rocks bring succor and lend support,
    Strength in the struggle. What I am?

    Nah, it's got to be an abalone.

    All that about gripping the rocks and "wrenching me loose", that's an abalone.

    :eek: Isn't this smiley the greatest? You can just see the caption "Wha-aat?!?" under it.

    It's a starfish.

    Ok, second try. I'll say coral.

    I still think abalone fits the riddle, though.
