Help: Ideal party size?

What's a good number of people to have in a party? I think my party might be getting a little large. Right now, I have 8 people, including my main character.

Here're the NPCs I have:
-Virgil
-Magnus
-Sogg Mead Mugg
-Gar
-Dog
-Jayna Stiles
-Swyft

Should I be trimming anyone from my party?

 

It’s a matter of preference. Combat wise if you have too many members they can start shooting each other, not to mention making some combats unnecessary slow.
Even if your char sucks in combats there is no need to have more than 5-6 followers.
Personally, I like to have parties as big as I can, just for the hell of it.

 

it depends on what type of character your playing, a thief needs to have several followers in combat situations, but also needs to have them wait while they steal some things...

 

Too many peoples!

I'm still playing the game through the first time around, so I'm not an authority on it or anything yet, but I notice the more people I have, the more annoying it becomes.

They CONSTANTLY have to dive straight in like idiots into a fight, sword in hand, to attack a granite or rock monster that's only going to damage their nice, new broadswords I just bought them. So for almost all fights with rock-like monsters, I always have to leave them behind and tell them to wait. (Telling them to back off doesn't always work, if the monster gets close enough they STILL attack anyway. SHEESH!)

Then, of course, for sneaking around and stealing, you have to tell the to wait AGAIN. Jeez. I think it'd be easier to go everywhere WITHOUT them.

And then, as if it's not annoying as it is, once you start to get too many people, clicking on them and telling them to stop waiting gets a little intricate, as the characters like to stand so close together sometimes that they start to overlap each other.

Also: You said you had *8* followers? What level are you at, or did you hack the game? I'm a level 37 elf, with level 20 charisma and maxed expert persuasion, and My follower max is still *6* followers...how did you get 8?

dog doesn't count for the maximum and he also counted himself.

I had a party of eleven once, including myself.

 

how the hell did you manage that? blackmail? death threat? hold their family hostage until they join you........that should be an option if ya ask me

 

The best party I ever had was Me, Dog, and Raven. That's 3. Throw in a few vorpal bunnies, say 2 or 3 if you really want to kick someone's ass. That brings us to 3 nominal on up to 6 or so temporarily.

The only thing NPC followers are good for in this game is (a) healing you, which Raven does, and (b) carrying your stuff. Raven isn't so good at this, so maybe toss in one of the Ogre NPCs like Sogg or Chukka.

 

I agree. I make a point of recruiting Sogg right at the beginning just so I don't have to carry anything.

 

easy... just four npc's which didn't count to the maximum:
Mutt
Thorvalt
Tollo Underhill
euhm (maybe Vollinger??)


the rest were normal followers

If you have Master Persuasion you have unlimited max followers. Just clearing things up a bit...

 

No way, I thought Master Persuasion made it so any NPC would join you regardless of their reaction/alignment.

Or wait... Master Persuasion makes it so that no NPCs will leave your party unless you order them to. They won't leave no matter how much they hate you.

One or the other, possibly both. I never heard the "no max followers" thing.

I have another question though. How popular is the multiplayer mode? I haven't tried it yet because of the lag. I don't know if this happens to other people, but the game runs extremely slowly at times for me (usually in heavily populated areas like Tarant), with looong loading times. Any tips for solving this problem? (I don't recall ever having this problem with Black Isle's RPGs, even on my old computer...) I imagine playing multiplayer would be pretty difficult, given the lag I have right now...

 

what do you think are the best followers for a thief character? right now i have virgil and sogg. i may ditch virgil soon cuz hes wicked slow with his speed of 7 whereas im up at about 16. im gonna get magnus as soon as i get to tarant, ive been kinda putting it off since i want to convince lukan im a member of the thieves guild. can anyone suggest people that would be good for me, preferably fast people who are good with thieves....

you can always use #wait instead of each individual follower, or just use whichever F-key it is, i dont really have any ideas on how to get them all back easily. what i do is just click as many as i can, then move away enough so that the ones who rejoined me move from the group, and getting the others to rejoin you, repeat

btw, if you make virgil leave your group, does he go back to the crash sight forever? can you make him rejoin whenever you want?

I never bother with followers. I bolster my thieving skills and make myself too sneaky to be caught. When I REALLY get cornerd, well I blow a hole in my attackers and run like hell.
