throwing quest problem

I know there's about a million posts about this already. I wrote one myself, but it mysteriously disappeared when I came back to check it. So here goes: I am doing the throwing quest, but when I try to knock out the lights with my boomerang it doesn't work. I can't hit them with arrows or my chakram, and I've even tried throwing stuff I don't need at them. I threw gems at it, and that worked. But are you really supposed to go around finding crap to throw at these stupid torches? It doesn't make any sense...why won't my chakram work?

 

Are you holding down the <alt> key? You need to do that to attack inanimate objects.
