I am just starting out the game today, and could use some quick recommendations on building a character that will be playable in the long run--I always tend to restart several times and would like to be spared it this time!

I was thinking of starting with melee. And I guess I could use stealing skill.
    Any other input? Stats/skills?

    Thanks!!

Well, it all depend on what kind of character you prefer. I like playing a mage, in which case the best things to get are the harm spell (does lots of damage), agility of fire(raises your dex), maybe healing spells if you're going to get rid of virgil, but I usually keep him for a while. Then I put points into intelligence and willpower and whatever spells I want. Sometimes I add persuasion too, but I think for the first time through skip it unless you're playing a thief. Oh yeah, and a couple of points in dodge and melee never hurts. And don't forget to put some points in Charisma if you want followers. I wouldn't recommend playing a thief the first time through...it makes the game too easy...not even halfway through the game you are skilled enough to go practically anywhere you want and steal practically anything you want. But if you do, my favorite is to put points into throwing, dodge, pick locks, pick pockets, persuasion, stealth, and charisma. Now as for technologists, I have no clue...I haven't really played one through...I don't like them as much and keep starting over with a mage or a thief.

well, if you want to play a tech character, you need to put points into firearms, throwing (for gernades), and lockpicking, if you wanna pick locks anyway. plus you need high intelligence to build things, and good perception for good aim

I like a half-ogre that has max dodge and melee in addition to max lockpicking. At level 50 nobody can touch you with this configuration and you also shouldn't have to worry about money too much. Just lockpick the shop chests and sell their own stuff back to them, but once you do all that I put the rest of the CPs into pickpocketing after I complete the gods' quest.

The "ultimate" character is the assassin, get a halfling or a dwarf with raised by orcs, if you chose a hal;fie, go to stillwater and kill that guy to get the ring of concealment, if your a dwarf put 2 points in electric for charged ring and drink essence of intellingence to get autolockpick. When you get 50 tech apt, kill magnus and nick his gloves. Put points in prowling, backstab, melee and dodge.

You can also try a magic assassin, which is simmilar but you need an elf instead, and have to put 2 points on cantrip instead of lockpick and also get flash. After that use a dark helm for 100 ma. And get again, melee, dodge, prowling and backstab.

Fight in turn based, run behind enemies, press prowl and then sink a dagger into their back.

thieves are the best way to go. take anything not tied down, and sell it. personally, i put points in healing salve, lockpick, pickpocket, agility, strength (for hauling all that stolen shit around), and charisma. LOTS of charisma. you get the best dialog options that way :p intelligence of 6 is all you need... if you want to make stuff, just buy tech books with the money you make from all that stolen loot... or drink intelligence potions. also, throwing is a must. the Yo-Yo of Doomâ„¢ is the only way to go.

It all depends on how hard you want the game to be, how much you want to get out of the game, and your own playing style. I played a Half-Ogre melee-type character with high persuasion and charisma my first time. After about half way, you have no trouble with enemies, and the high per and CH gave me many followers to choose from. If you want more of a challange, go for a mage type character. You'll probobly get more out of the game that way than with a melee character. For the most challenge, do a techie. You get tons of cool stuff, but you always have to carry all of your materials around, which gets tiring. As I said, it all depends on how YOU want to play it. Oh, and you can always do the ever popular thief-type, but that way always seemed way too easy to really have any fun with. :)

    I'm currently playing as:

    A necro dude
    A rogue
A half-orge with an intelligence of 1 and unbelieveable hacking skills (I use him to run around and whack people for no apprent reason. It's fun.)
    A healer
    A gunslinger
    A dwarven tech
    A Bowman Elven guy

and I plan on starting with an Elven Magical Thief.

Or..If you're planing to play as an evil mage you should invest a few points into offensive spells(necro black,force,fire..)and you should get yourself a teleport spell for quick escape. Then raise your charma for extra followers(necro dude,Bollo,Torien...)and int and willpower for more magic spells.Beauty and perception isn't needed so much if you're playing as evil scum-bag.Oh..and there are cool evil backgrounds for your character....

    ....................have fun!!!!!!!!!!
