A true pacifist will be difficult if not impossible, but as long as you're willing to be a little hypocritical...

You want a charasmatic diplo-mage. IN and CH are going to be your primary stats. The CH to max out followers, the IN to increase dialogue options and max out maintainable spells. The colleges to consider are Nec White (but Virgil can do this) Summoning (if this is pacifist acceptable) or stat boosters from the elementals to cast on your party members. Virgil on Strength of Earth and Agility of Fire is quite deadly. (Sogg is even better). BE is nice for the intitial reaction. CN and WP for the spells.

i'm guessing that prowling, charisma and beauty might be a good way to go.

some magick spells should also probably do the trick without hurting an other.

    Other alternatives to consider:

Persuasion - often you can talk your way through quests rather than resort to fighting - even indirectly. EG:

NPC: I will give you the Jester's Crown if you kill the Ancient Bear that is threatening our village.

Player: But I REALLY need the Crown to cure my old, sick granny. Won't you please reconsider? I'm sure the Ancient Bear can be lured away from the village somehow.

NPC: That's not a bad idea - OK the Crown is yours!

Classic non-violent quest resolution perfect for the confirmed pacifist.

Another skill to consider is Dodge. There are going to be some situations where a fight is unavoidable, so being able to dodge out of harm's way will be quite valuable.

A highly skilled dodger not only avoids damage but turns an enemy's attacks back on themselves via critical failures. I'm pretty sure that is allowed in most pacifistic teachings. I mean is it YOUR fault if some barbarian trips over and stabs himself in the foot as he charges towards you waving a highly dangerous sword??

You both havent really enthisezed (whoa really messed that spelling up.) the fact that you need to be able to heal your followers who will be doing the fighting for you. Heal spells for magic's Healing potions for Techs.

And dont say you can talk your way out of a fight with a 10ft wear rat (and his buddies).

Well techniclly for were rats you could use charm beast(Druid lvl 1), but you did make a good point. You should probly need some healling skill in there too.

Pacifist was the word, it would be pretty twisted if you allowed others to fight for you. so we are talking about someone who doesn't get into fights willingly, and if it happens, doesn't fight them.

you can run, and you can hide.

actually you can teleport, and haste, hold and pacify :)

it might be possible to get through arcanum without killing anyone(party or not), i'm sure its possible, unless you got some problematic area where viloence is the only solution, and you must do it, lets hope non of that exists :)

How about a Wong-fei Hung-esque pacifist? She/he tries to to talk their way out of fights, until they or one of their companions get hurt, and then beat the aggressor snotless with their fists.
Just an idea, since fatigue damage is in.

Exactly. You can buy fatigue based weapons, so you dont atleast need to kill anyone, just beat them unconsious. Remember to hit F5 after you've finished, otherwise your followers will finish them off. I think you might be able to play the game without actually killing anyone, not sure of this though. It said so somewhere. I think.

    Nay to pacifists!

Eyuks.. being a pacifist really doesn't fit in the lands of Arcanum. Who's gonna sweet talk a Orge. Exprience will be a problem too..

I think you need the expo if you want to be a good tech/wizard/warrior etc. If you are interested in playing the game by using less direct methods, you dont necessarily need all that exprience nor stats. You can allways try to find another way in. For example. You're not a good lock picker, neither can you talk your way in due to some reason (like unfitting alignment etc). Use a dynamite on the door. They never attack you, if you blow it with TNT. They do attack you if they can see you pick their locks. This was just a simple example, but anyway.

Well, of course it depends how you do it. But I've managed to pull it off many times. I guess some of the people tend to react to it, but if they're looking the other way, or dont have a clear line of sight, then they wont attack you. In Fallout II it wass possible to plant bombs right into people's pockets. That was fun  (or was if Fallout I, cant remember)

I can call you eddie and eddie you can call me al

A pacifist is someone who opposes the use of violence. This ranges from the personal "i won't use violence" to the universal "i won't even be around anyone who uses violence". As I play Arcanum I'm becoming increasingly convinced that a pacifist would be an extremely difficult character... (and would almost HAVE to be a mage)

only if you NEVER attack anyone, even with spells. Summoning seems to be a moral grey area...
