I have a huge problem with Arcanum!

My former computer was a real dirtbag. The processor was a 450 mHz (which acted like a 133 ditto), my RAM was a slow 100 mHz 64 mb thingie and to even manage to get the game working I had to buy a Nvidia Geforce 2 Mx/200 card (yes, I didn't even have an AGP port)

The game was nearly unplayable, so I decided to make an improvement

I changed the motherboard and everything else. The only thing that is left is the former graphics card. Now I have a 1200 mHz AMD Duron processor, 128 mb of RAM and in overall a quite decent computer

And after I have played for a while I am kicked out to Windows. It repeats itself all the time. After the game has been running for a few minutes it shuts down automatically, sometimes the computer restarts! And it did actually work on my former, lousier computer (though it was a laggy history)

I think I have the same drivers for my Geforce Card. All other games work perfectly so I wonder why Arcanum don't. Is it becasue I have Windows 2000 instead of Windows 98 or what the hell is it? Reinstalling the game doesn't work either

Has anyone had any similar problems?

I've run Arcanum with that card with no problems. My guess is that the problem is your OS. I use 98, because it's pretty stable. If you have a copy, try it.

Naw it can't be the OS
    I'm on a PIII 466mhz, 128mb ram, geforce 2 mx400 64mb running on Windoes 2000 Professional Adition
maybe you should upgrade (or downgrade) your video card drivers...
    that or I dunno

Actually, Wyrm, it most likely is the OS. I think Arcanum has some problems under Win2k...try getting the 1074 patch if you haven't already. Failing that, update your drivers for everything you have.

Top 3 guesses as to crashed/resets:
    1. Bad memory
    2. Overheating
    3. Multimedia drivers (video or sound)

Since you say all other games work fine, I'd not be thinking numbers one or two, so I'd take a look at your drivers.

On Windows 2000, do this by:
    • Click start menu
    • Click run
    • Type dxdiag.exe in the box
    • Hit enter
    • Follow the instructions to run the tests and read the results

Look out for uncertified drivers. If your drivers are uncertified, go to Microsoft.com and find out which is the latest certified version for Win2000. Download and install them (from OEM website, if necessary).

It could easily be something other than the drivers, but if you're stuck for other leads, they're worth a check.

You might also want to try the DirectX Sound Debugger thingamabob. Ask Milo about it, or do a search for it.

i have no problems w/ arcanum in windows 2000. In fact, the only games that dont work well for me are really old DOS games.

I run Arcanum on a rather old home computer using 98 and on my laptop at work with 2000. I have not had that problem with either.

That would be because Win 2000 doesn't have DOS, it has a DOS emulator thingy.

128mb of RAM = not a decent computer.
In this day and age, 256mb should be your minimum.

In my earlier post I stated that I was using a rather home computer. What I meant by this is a 350MHz PII with 192MEGs of RAM a Voodoo3 3000 PCI card and SB X-gamer sound card. As previously stated I have had zero problem.

Hmmmm strange...Most of you have lots of ram and a bit slow processors. A strange combo.

Despite your clear and effective attempt to avoid my off-topic and totally unhelpful comments, I shall continue to attempt to derail the thread of this thread. Pun intended because I like cheesy puns.

    Ahem.

No, it's Feldon who gets lots of ram.
If you know what I mean.

<edit> just look at his sig :p

Nononono. PLEASE explain this fascinating observation to us Etalis...

Maniac, enough RAM can make up for a slightly slower processor.

I'd rather have extra, extra RAM then a slightly faster CPU. Trust me, you load a machine with enough RAM and the baby will purr like a little kitty cat in your arms... Right before God kills it.
