This question is actually about Baldurs Gate - Shadows of Amn. Ok...ive finished my second time round of Arcanum and decided to move onto what alot of RPG fans have played before. First of all, I can hardly get past the few creatures at the start...ive rescued the two party memebers in the cages at the back, equiped the weapons near the "masters" golem...and still i cannot defeat hardly anything..exspecially those damn goblins..and what is even worse, after they finished of what they fighting (which dosent happen very often) they continue to fight one another and i have to move them before they will stop. I havent got as far as the group of goblins after trying to talk with those two delusional golems in the sew type area..just after the lab. Is there somthing im doing wrong? am I just an idiot?
I had the impression that the idea of BG2 was to import your BG1 charactors, and then play the game from where it left off. Perhaps it is a little harder without your original BG charactor.
I'll try to help you out here... also you can use http://groups.google.com to search for BG2. That will lead you to newgroups about BG. Try Planescape:Torment too. A really wonderful game. Don't buy Icewind Dale - unless you've buddies that will play the whole game with you. Though BG2 is based on AD&D rules, it's more of a Min/Max game (though only during your first time through the game). You'd want specialists, not jack-of-all-trades. What's your characters' stat? Weapon proficiency? Did you equip them so they're most effective? Tried all available spells? Goblins shouldn't be a problem... since you're not starting as level 1 character in BG2SoA. You're probably around level 9 - and you should be able smash those annoying pest without trouble. Don't use the AI scripts. Press the "lantern" icon on the lower-right, or press "A" (IIRC it's "A"). Instead of using the default scripts, press spacebar to pause, and command your party yourself. Those default scripts sucks - you may want to use manual control, or search for custom AI scripts. Also that sounds like a bug to me - a bug that should be fixed in some patch. Have you got all the patches already? Keep going - this lab isn't very large. You'll be out of that hell hole very soon. Remember BG2 is based on AD&D, not the system Fallout and Arcanum use. So don't assume anything - and I'd recommend reading the manual first - it's not very detailed, but still helpful for newbies. Understanding AD&D's rules will help too. Don't hesitate to email your questions to me - at evil_war_nut@yahoo.com.hk (and end this discussion here... it's an Arcanum forum after all) Actually, I am having fun answering questions about games I've played before. Perhaps I'm just a freak
While you cannot import your old party, you're not missing anything. Old party from BG1 is limited in experience - IIRC an exp cap of about level 7 or so. The expansion, Tales of the Sword Coast, raises the cap to about level 9. BG2SoA starts your character at about level 9. Because your party is captured in BG2, so any items, no matter how powerful, will be lost - unless you use a known exploit to retain your items (except one very special item, which must be imported from BG1, or console-in in BG2. This item is for a super easter egg across 3 games: Bg1, BG2SoA and BG2ToB). Well you *do* missing something - the story of BG1. But that's not very important - as Interplay expected that. The game will tell you what happened before (your conversation with Imoen and Jaheira in prison, your Journal, cutscenes). <font size=-1>[ This Message was edited by: kcwong on 2002-02-18 21:46 ]</font>
Yes it is quite alot harder, considering due to some unfortunate circumstances I no longer have my old character and have had to start anew. Tho i had presumed that this was not based only on existing Baldurs gate players. Im sure there are alot of people who may have only started their expirience with the game recently and have probably gone and bought the first one second, its quite closed minded to presume that is all its for. As to posting a question about another game, i did so because since learning of this forum awhile ago and only just starting to participate, ive found it more helpful then any Baldurs gate forums. It has helped me my second time round with Arcanum to get more out of the game....and its not very "stupid" to think that people who play games such as Arcanum would also know alot about other RPG's and i find frequent mention of diffrences and such to other games around here. But no...offence was intended, if thats what ive caused.
