What's the best way (if there is a way) to get past the Ore Golems in the Black Mountain Mines without fighting them or getting killed? I couldn't hope to kill one, and the AIs of the two mages in my party (Virgil and Dante), who heal like crazy outside of battle, almost don't heal me at all during battle. I have no prowl skill, so obviously that's out. If I must attempt to take one out, do they have any weaknesses? I don't see how my party could kill one under any circumstances, seeing that each hit we deliver (with all members of my party wielding a balanced sword except me, wielding a fine revolver) does at most 3 damage. Sure, I could go out and buy some good armor, but I'm a gnome, and small armor is a bit rare (currently I'm wearing a small smoking jacket, which is quite useful since for some strange reason the base reaction for most people with me is 38, never figured out why). I've already tried simply running right through them, but I got stopped by a crowd of Kites less than halfway through that surrounded me, allowing the granite rats and ore golems to catch up and make short work of us. I feel sure that the traps in the tunnel I keep hearing of will not be a problem, both because of my lack of armor to lose and the fact that my mages love to heal (it seems that I am not too technological to enjoy a fairly good effect from magical healing, though potions only heal me for about 2 hp). Unless, of course, these traps have the potential to do over 50 points of damage a piece. [ This Message was edited by: Eiryn on 2002-01-04 16:51 ]
Hello Eiryn! The best way to kill those damned golems if ur Tech is to use molotovs or other grenades, or with a mage's fireflash(about 2 to 3, I believe) . And also there are some disposable small leather armors in the mine, so you can keep your smoking jacket intact.. Hope this helps.. BTW.Whats ur question about Schematics?? :winknudge:
Heh heh... Sorry about that, you must have replied just as I was editing the message to cut out the thing in the title about the schematics (which I forgot to even post originally) and replacing the name `Quint` with Virgil. I don't know why I keep thinking his name is Quint... Anyway, thanks, I just happened to train my explosives to Molotov so I could build bullets while I was in the mine. I was thinking explosives would be the way to go, seeing that the bastards are made of rock, but I didn't have the materials and wanted to see if there was any other way so I wouldn't have to walk all the way back to Tarant and find me some <material needed to make Molotovs other than rags and whose name currently escapes me>. Only thing is I have no throwing skill. Hrmn.
I would go back to Tarant if I were you. Load up on gas and rags from the trash cans. It usually takes more that one day to get enough molotovs to kill them all, but it's well worth it.
To kill the Ore Golems, have your followers wiat out of sight of the Golem (like around a corner). Run out and let the Golem see you. It will follow you as you run back and through your waiting followers. Stay just ahead of the Golem as you run into an area of the maze you've already cleared. Your followers will fall in behind the Golem and attack it from the rear. The Golem will concentrate on catching you. Eventually, your followers will kill it.
Heh, that sounds like a cheat eh FK? heh , just kidding, its a sound advice BTW. drawback is, sometimes the monsters concentrate on ur followers too, like those wererats at the bottom of the mine, they usually shred my followers to pieces.
I just recently got to this part of the game. Swords turn out to be lousy against ore golems. If you move your cursor over a golem while you're wielding a sword, you'll see you have a 5% chance to hit. Guess it makes sense; hitting a rock with a sword sounds like it would be ineffective. I went back to shrouded hills and recruited an extra party memeber (Sog Mead) and I went to Tarant and bought every crushing weapon I could find. That just barely got me to the point where I could beat those monsters. --Rick
I forgot, the best weapon against Golems, and I mean the best weapon in the game, is the PyroTechnic axe, Its indestructible and can kill anything with 1 to 3 hits... Its easy to create too, just buy a random schematics from the shop in Tarant and buy some tecnical manuals, and buy some fuels. Then assuming u have magnus or urself, create a featherweight axe. This weapon is a long term one so its really good.
For that I would need loads of money. I just passed 3000 gold, and I'm not eager to go back to having less than 1000 again, so I believe I'll get a couple levels, train a bit of throwing, and use the molotovs. It sounds like it could get me through the more difficult guys in the lower levels pretty easily from what I keep reading from the posts, even being the level 14 premade gnome I am.
You could buy the stuff and then steal it all back. That's if you have lockpicks. I think you should have picked up a set by now.
At 14th level, you should be able to defeat the Golems using my method. But keep in mind that this is ONLY for Ore Golems (oh, and Seething Masses, Fire Elementals, basically any creature that will lumber after you). As Skie88 said, if you try it against fast creatures, you'll be torn to shreds. And Skie -- it's not cheating! It's strategy and tactics, dammit!
Wangus - Yeah I could, if I were a thief. I have no skill in any of the three thieving categories (nor in anything else except Repair, Firearms, Haggle, and Persuasion) Kane - Eh, your method would probably work, but I would prefer just lobbing a few molotovs in the general direction of the advancing golems; it seems a lot easier for someone like me, who just wants to get the combat parts of the game over with as quickly as possible.
Well Feldon, They might be tactics and true there is nothing wrong with them, it's just not extremely realistic. I would keep chasing you if one of your friends wacked me in the head while I was chasing you. Another note to Feldon Kane, I know it's off topic but I just realized why your name sounds so familiar. Keldon Warlord! Sorry if you don't understand. Wangus
Keep in mind, Wangus, that the creatures this tactic works against have brains made of stone, lava and fire. They're not very smart. And my tag is stolen from a different Magic: The Gathering card. I changed some punctuation and spelling, but you should be able to spot which one it is.
I honestly can't remember what it does anymore. Next time I think of it, I'll pull out my thousands of cards (neatly sorted by Mana Cost and color) and take a look. Now I'm curious. I used it in a lot of winning Decks. Actually, I think I'll hit the 'Net real quick and find out... Yeah, that's the one! [ This Message was edited by: Feldon Kane on 2002-01-04 20:18 ]
Actually, Eiryn since ur a Tech, its very easy to make money, just make and sell stuffs like the fine revolver for example, they fetch a decent prize and the ingredients are very cheap, sometimes can be found in Trashcans. Just keep making /selling em and u can be richer than bates.. And about what Feldon says, I did say that I was just kidding, hell, I did that strat once or twice before. But Feldon , If Eiryn will be using molotovs, I think that will be cheating, heh, unless the molotov bug was corrected by the newest patch or is it?
How I got past them with my techie (I didn't think about molotov's or anything like that. doh! :grrr: ) I simply took the train to Ashbury, got the Dog, and basically let him do most of the work on the ore golems, while the rest of my guys either healed the dog, or went after kites and stuff if they were close by as well.
Yeah, Dog kicks ass, all right. Skie, you know I'm just messing with you. But I have never used a patch on my game, or Molotov's either. So there's a bug with them? Interesting. I'll have to try them next time through. Thanks for the tip!
Heh, I know that FK  .And the bug was the unlimited AP on throwing molotovs, u know u can kill any monster in a single round with a molotov as long as u have lots of them... I hope its fixed already coz it will mess ur game.
