The Beverly Hillbillies never showed over here...

Okay, I see what you mean now by bluegrass. Don't think it's really my 'thing', so I'll just stick to what I listen to now...

I must say I'm surprised at the popularity of anything with Country roots. I don't have anything against it, it's just that Country has some definite associations in the UK which kind of firmly place it in a niche.

There's some cooky pop version of "Country Roads" over here at the moment. I can't work out whether it's a novelty record or the first of a wave of hideous abominations. Before the fires start, please let me stress that I am not claiming this is bluegrass. I've not heard any bluegrass but I'd be guessing that isn't it

The Nashville Whores? I don't think I've heard anything by them. If you hum it, I'll see if it rings any bells.

When will I learn that when I think I'm being subtle or attempting "dry wit" without a smilie it just confuses people? :shootme:

Milo, check out Ricky Scaggs. I was first introduced to bluegrass by his cd's.. He is an awesome mandolin player and singer. Also, check out other Dan Tyminski's songs (he is the lead vocals on I am a Man of Constant Sorrow) Check out Lonesome River Band, Blue Highway, Thyrd Thyme Out, Nickel Creek, Alison Krauss, (sp?). If the older, original bluegrass appeals to you, check out Bill Monroe (father of bluegrass), Ralph Stanley, Flatt and Scruggs, .......

P.S. I HIGHLY recommend Ricky Scaggs. (Not his mainstream country shit, though...)

Great, retard, thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to try Morpheus and see if it works for me. My file-sharing proggy (KaZaa) hasn't worked since I got rid of it's spyware. Once I do get it up and running, I'm definitely going to check those out.

I never thought I'd get into Bluegrass, because I don't really like country music. But then I actually heard some (on the O Brother soundtrack) and found out I liked it. It's nothing like Shania Twain or Garth Brooks. In fact it's real American "roots" music, the kind that I love. I'm deep into old Delta Blues and old negro field hollers and spirituals. Country blues from the '30s and '40s in other words. Bluegrass is kinda like country blues' white cousin.

Well, Reg, tough luck for you, because while Shania is good-looking (sometimes), her music bites ass.

Er ... 'scuse me ... sorry to interrupt your line dancing night ...

But I forgot to tell y'all about another few bands you're not going to be interested in but which fill me with joy.

    • Autour de Lucie: French and fantastic.
    • Deep Forest: also French, I think, kind of, their album 'Boheme' from several years ago is still one of my all time favourites.
    • Delicious Monster: they did one album in 1994 and you'll never find it. I only have it on tape, since it was during my pre-CD days. I'm terrified of it getting chewed up.

    Wow, talk about obscure!

What type of music is Delicious Monster, why did they only make one album, and why don't you back up the tape?

    Your answers ...

    1) High pitched, girl-fronted chirpiness, but not in a pop way. Sounds awful, doesn't it?

    2) See above  In fact, I could never persuade anyone else that they were good, and apparently neither could they.

    3) What if the oringinal got chewed up while I was making the back up? Aaarrgghhhhhh!

    Re: musical horizons

I just started listening to The Strokes' new CD, "Is This It?" Anyone else ever heard of it? No one at school has, although it can't be too "out-there" since it was in Rolling Stone.
