I'd rather listen to the Darlings from "The Andy Griffith Show".

Ever listen to Bela Fleck? Now that guy can play a banjo.

Feldon, now you're talking my language!! I wondered if there were any other bluegrass fans out there.

You are right, the Darlings are (were?) awesome.

I don't believe I know Bela Fleck. Who is he?

Oh yeah, that reminds me of a few more:

    • Spice Girls: they're gone, bt greatness like that cannot be forgotten.
    • Back Street Boys: you can't beat a shaved chest and a nipple ring, I say, and the excellent music is just a bonus.
    • N-Sync: Justin's the cutest, but I'd really settle for any of them. I wish I could fit another of their posters on my wall, but it's full.
    • I used to think Britney was good until recently, when they showed footage of her fully clothed and she lost all credibility in my eyes.

What about Tiffany?! Her remake of "I Think We're Alone Now" rocked. Waaay better than Debbie Gibson, fer shure. Awesome.
And you're right, Justin is the cutest. I love my N-Sync bedspread. There's nothing like waking up under all those boys.

retard, I don't know if you'd like Bela
Fleck or not. He's a helluva player, but it's not Bluegrass. He's kind of the Van Halen of the banjo.

~ pink floyd - wish you were here - live version, the song i will probably have played at my funeral

~ metallica - welcome home (sanitarium), followed closely by everything they did before the black album

~ alien ant farm - smooth criminal, looooooooove the bass

~ it's not easy being green/the rainbow connection - kermit the frog, the only two songs that have ever made me cry

    Some minor quibbles:

    - It was our Dads and Mums (Mamas and Papas, to you  ) who were into prog rock. I can't help feeling the irony of harking back to a band in a genre labelled 'progressive' over thirty years ago.

    - I know who Yes were, but that don't mean they get a place in my list of favourite music. No way I'd disparage 'em, but music for me is about energy, and often associated strongly with significant points of my life. The only one Yes would qualify for is my birth :p

    - You had a typo on four farters, and I don't know who the other 3 were

I forgot about bluegrass -- I listened to the soundrack from "O Brother, Where Art Thou" constanly for months, and got the live album recently.

That's awesome, Nugget. I'm just starting to get into bluegrass because of that very same movie.

Can anyone recommend some good bluegrass to a newcomer?

Check out retard's earlier post in this thread. I would add Allison Krauss, though it's kind of pop/bluegrass. :wavey:

Ooh yeah, Allison Krauss. I'm only familiar with a few of her tunes (so far), mostly the ones off the "O Brother" soundtrack. I agree, she has the voice of an angel. So clear and bell-like.

Anyway, thanks for the bluegrass picks. I'll be checking these out as soon as I get my file-sharing proggy up and running.

Bluegrass is actually named after Bill Monroe's backing band, the Blue Grass Boys. thus he is the father ;)

never really gotten the hots for bluegrass, and the bluegrass people are very convservative *s* you should hear Progressive Bluegrass or Contemporary Bluegrass, both are seen with the evil eye by the people who love traditional bluegrass, but the funky thing is that its allmost the same thing, just some pop, jazz added to the tunes.

What exactly is bluegrass music? I've never heard of it, and I've never heard of any of the people you've mentioned - am I not old enough (30+) to understand what you mean, or do I not just get into enough old stuff?

Banjo, fiddle, stand-up bass, and guitar played at a fast tempo in Major chords. Ever heard the theme to "The Beverly Hillbillies"? Kinda like that.
