Activating Mechanised Arachnid?

Ive managed to build one, but how to you activate it?

it cant be thrown/used with the hand button in the inventory.

 

You don't use it in that way. In your inventory screen, just click and drag the arachnid to the little circular "world" screen in the upper right-hand corner. You'll then revert back to the normal game screen and the cursor will look different. Click someplace on the screen and you'll throw the arachnid there. It should activate.

Or you can put it in one of your hotkeys and click the corresponding number. Then just point to where you want it and click.
