This has probably been debated before, but I would like everyone's opinions on this issue. The fact of the matter is, most people who purchased Arcanum did so because they loved Fallout and wanted to relive that experience in a whole new setting. So do the majority of you find that Arcanum lived up to expectations? Is it a worthy successor to Fallout?

My personal thoughts if you care (I have just purchased Arcanum 3 days ago and havent completed it yet): I had extremely high hopes for this game. The setting of tech vs magic is very intriguing and the options of character creation seem limitless. However, I was disappointed. First of all, the setting is far too Tolkien; I was expecting a more Victorian world a la Ultima: Martian Dreams. But it just feels like a traditional midieval RPG setting with some steam engines and guns tacked on, with the standard townspeople's clothing replaced with suits and dapper hats. Maybe if they advanced the time to the modern era (elves driving cars! dwarves hacking computers!) it would be really interesting.

Another issue: the graphics. Though the graphics are sort of dated and unspectacular (I can live with that), the real problem here is animation. Its just too jerky and rough. Step backwards from Fallouts engine IMO.

I do like the storyline so far, and combat is kind of fun.

Welcome to the forum! (Beat you to it Jinxed ).

You're right, this topic has been debated extensively, and most people probably don't want to get into it again.

However, I'll make a couple of points:

    1. I feel that your comment on the setting being too Tolkienesque with steam engines and guns tacked on is inaccurate. It is set in the year 1885, and I think the setting matches it.

    2. I never had any problems with animation. Then again, it varies from computer to computer.

    3. I agree with you about the storyline and combat .

IMO there is alittle problem with the graphcis. a good example is with the large spiders, I mean they are just enlarged original sprite thingies. in some cases it does look fake. The battles could be alittle more adjusted, that is also concerning the balance in Arcanum. But that is a discussion for another time.

Ah gotcha. I actually think that Troika are working on a sequel right now. Hints and rumours were dropped earlier this year before the game came out...

First of all, the elves wouldn't be driving cars because they despise technology and have an aptitude for magick. And if dwarves were hacking into COMPUTERS then I would say it's TOO modern. It's set in an industrial revolution, which is an age that marks the BEGINNING of technology, therefore the technology isn't advanced yet. And as to the question, Arcanum Vs. Fallout, I'm torn between the two and therefore cannot make a final decision. I'd say they're both equally as fun.

I like Fallout better but it's mostly because I didn't have so many bugs there thus I could enjoy it w/o problems.

iirc FO2 was the most bug infested piece of gaming software to be released by it's creators. Though a patch may have fixed a lot of it, it was bad bugwise.

FO2 was an excellent game gameplaywise though, which more than made up for the buggyness.

I like both Arcanum and Fallout 1 & 2

I agree with you there. There were more bugs in Fallout 2 than in Arcanum. A LOT more bugs. If you've played Fallout 2 Jinxed, you wouldn't be complaining so much about Arcanum .

I played fallout 2 for 2 years everyday. I experienced every possible bug in the game. Don't worry, In my previous posts, I compared the 2. I also said that too much time passed since the 2. And both have a comaprable amount of glithches. But Arcanum was released in 2001. I though that after all those years, they woudn't have maybe all of those mistakes but they did....

Some things are beyond any man's control...others are just too lazy fix them .

No, seriously, I don't think there's that many problems. Most of the things you guys call bugs I look upon as inconveniences.

There's always bound to be a different bug count among users of any given program.

Just to clear this up: the graphics and animations do suck. There's no way around it. After playing for a couple hours I managed to adjust to it though.

I played Fallout2 and I liked it a little better than Arcanum.
I think you all are strange.I played both games WITHOUT ANY patches and had experienced only few bugs. And I played them more than once.

Yeah, I never patched my Fallouts...still, it was funny, just running around in the desert to get weapons to buy fuel for you car, and there is the boot of your car . It was annoying when you had heaps of stuff and couldn't put it anywhere because the boot had disappeared as well . I swear, that car is even weirder than Herby the Love Bug...
