I finished this game with my forcecollege mage yesterday which was pretty easy...now i started with new halfling persuasive-gunslinger-thief.

First problem is that i can't seem to steal from shops in tarant. Merchants always wake up when i try to lockpick. and when i sneak into room their awareness level goes to danger so that won't help either. Is it supposed to be like this?

hmm...i guess that's all of my problems then  not so many as i thought

If you are trying to break in in a shop at night and try to pick locks near the shopkeeper they will wake up unless you are prowling (I'm sure there may be other ways to get around this). If it says dangerous, that doesn't necessarily mean that you will be spotted, especially if someone is asleep.
Just make sure you are prowling when trying to pick locks and don't worry so much about the warning level when they are asleep. It seems that prowling makes your character try to do everything quietly.

You also need fairly high skill in lockpick

To be able to do much with lockpick, you will need at least rank 3, and will want to gt to rank 5 ASAP.

Most skills don't start to really show benefits until about rank 3.

get expertise. that is the way to go. It is pointless to use a skill in Arcanum without atleast being an expert. that also means 3 slots

first and foremost, why would you want to be a halfling? :???:
secondly, did you even put and CPs into prowling?

Hey, don't knock the halflings! That sort of talk can get you stabbed in the kneecap.

    Ogres aren't ugly goddamnit.

They're cute in that extra-chromosomal sort of way.

Halflings start the game with the highest dexterity possible. It's possible for a halfling to have a super high melee skill (at least 3 ranks) when they start the game. It's probably the easiest to solo with halflings because their high dexterity means that they can build up their combat skills very quickly.

Expert repair rocks by the way, just thought I'd put that little bit in. I'm playing through now as a "repairman", and he's investing in the mechanical and smithy trees...at level 12 or so, I have 17 intelligence, 6 mechanical schematics and 4 or 5 smithy schematics, as well as expert repair. I'm going for the automatons .

Prowling might come in handy when you're stealing a certain Idol. Or destroying a certain Scourge.

Prowling has it's uses I'm sure...I haven't tried it yet, although I'm pretty sure I will at some point...

Has anyone else made automatons? They rock...

I think when you're in combat and prowl behind your enemy and stab he gets more damage than without prowl. i might be wrong though. as usually

That's the backstab skill coming into use. It works when people are aware of you, and you do do extra damage, although it's best used in turn-based combat. If people are unaware of your presence (through the use of prowling or something like that) then you do even more damage.

I have 5 ranks in prowling and 5 in backstab and when I backstab while prowling I do about 8 times as much dammage than just ordinary backstab.

    (I can take down a level 20 half-ogre in a single hit)

If you are going to try backstabbing an unaware opponent make sure you have decent melee. I had one point in melee. And a critical failure with your dagger causes you to do +200% backstabbing damage. One of those is instant death.
