Its such a fun game! The most fun part of the game is that you can "bribe" other civilizations to go against another lol. That is you give them some resources, luxuries or new technologies. Hehe, I'm very evil. When a bigger nation wants tribute from my smaller and weaker civilization(bullying), I declare war on them and "bribe" all the other civilizations to go against them as well, lol. Sometimes they sign peace treaty though, but I "bribe" them back to my side. Great game, I think those who dont own the game now should go try it.

Yeah, I got it a week or so ago and have been playing it ever since. It's a blast.

What Civ are you playing? I gave the Persians a run and am now on the French.

Also, what level are you playing it on? I'm finding Warlord level beatable, but harder than I expected. I doubt I'll have much luck on Prince level.

Im playing the Aztecs now. Wiped off Zululand and Germany, with the help of others. Germany(being a tyrant), first invaded Zululand. I joined in too, and when the Zulus were left with their last town, they sought a peace treaty and I imposed that they pay me a sum per turn, a lump sum, and their maps . After like 4 turns, the Zulus were destroyed by the Germans. Now the Germans got a big land area-the biggest. I dont like their attitude towards me therefore I imposed war on them, then dragged Inquois, Russia, England and Babylon into the war. At first we were losing, but when Babylon joined in with their cavalry, Germany started to lose. In the end the last of german provinces were annexed by England :p. Now Im trying to think of a way to defeat the haughty Babylonians, they now got the biggest land area, most powerful army, 2nd technologically advanced(I am first, in the Industrial age)and worst of all, Babylon is just beside my weak empire(I sent all my most powerful units(musketmen) to the front lines, leaving some spearmen, longbowmen, pikemen in defense of my cities)I could "bribe" the other civilizations into helping me but Babylon would attack me first. Anyone help me?

Find a civilisation near you, get Bablyon to help you attack them - that will give you an excuse to bring back all your good units. As soon as they are back, sign a peace treaty. Babylon's units should be out of position, then attack them.

Man, I've been hearing so much hype about this game! As a long time gamer (back to the old text-parser adventure games), I somehow managed to miss out on this entire series.

Since I have some extra scratch, what's all your opinions on a complete newbie to the series getting in on the newest one? The only strategy games I've ever played are ones like Rollercoaster Tycoon and Sim City (enjoyed both). I also tried Age of Empires (whatever the latest one is), but couldn't get fully into it. I liked the idea, but the actual execution kinda turned me off. It seemed to me that too much time and frustration went into trying to get my troops to act how I wanted them to in battle, leading to frantic click-and-scroll fests. Too many frustrating battles, not enough diplomacy and actual govermental stuff.

If I didn't enjoy AoEII, would I enjoy Civ III?

*goes off to read some reviews*

Oh, and if anyone has a good place to buy it online and you could linkify me, I'd be much obliged.

    Milo, try http://www.ebworld.com

Electronics Boutique is probably the most reliable place to buy it from.

Civilisation is a turn-based strategy game. Not at all like AoEII. Made by Sid Meier (who also made Rollercoaster Tycoon), and the general consensus has been "This game fucking rules, go out and buy it now."

Noooooo Babylon is now in the INDUSTRIAL AGE(same as me). Im curently building cavalry(just got my supply of horses from the territories I captured from Germany) Anyway, most of my units lost their lives in the war against Germany.
My civilizations currently own these cities:
    Aztecs cities:5
    Babylonian cities:2(defected)
    Russian cities:3(defected)
    Zulu cities:2(conquered)
    German cities:now 2(conquered)
    Total cities:14
Havent got any cities from the Inquois,English and Americans

No Milo, its not like Age of Empires. You can win without fighting too, that is if you want to be bullied by other bigger nations who want tribute from you. HOWEVER, sometimes tyrants will declare war on you without any reasoning. If you dont have the army, make sure you have the resources, luxuries and latest technologies, for you can use them to lure other nations into the war.
Once Babylon declared war on me. I bribed Russia, Inquois, England, Americans to fight them. Zululand had just been defeated and Germany(then a big nation) was too proud and have anything they want therefore I cant bribe them. I didnt touch the Babylonians 1 bit, they agreed to sign the peace treaty a while later. THATS WHY I HATE THE BABYLONIANS SO MUCH.

    Damn! That game's $50!

Also, some of the reviews on ebworld seem kinda sketchy. Is the game really slow on older computers (ie P2 400, TNT2 vid card)? Is it buggy? I might hold off until it drops in price a little. That or get my little nephews and nieces really shitty Christmas presents so I can grinch out and buy myself this game.

One of the games that always seemed to be mentioned in the reader reviews of CivIII is Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. I found this in a jewel case version for $10 on-line. Do you guys think it would be worth it to cut my teeth on this game while I'm waiting for CivIII to drop? It gets really good reviews, but the lack of a manual concerns me. Is it really necessary? Is the learning curve too steep without a manual for a newbie to strategy games? Are the graphics decent (keep in mind that Fallout 1/2 or Arcanum graphics are fine with me)?

Well, Ive just finished Civ 3, and I didn't encounter any bugs in it. Also it load and works much faster than Call to Power. The graphics are great as well.

As for Alpha Centauri, its a great game too, gameplay wise, not much on the graphics though unlike Civ3, but they will do fine. Its not that hard to learn so no need for the manual.

What I like with Alpha is your ability to customize/create your own units(not implemented in Civ3). As for what I hate with the Civ games, Its that forced retirement thing.

Oh ya, my buying of this game marks the end of my cash on hand(not in the bank).
Games I brought this year which made me broke:
Nox(Wow, COOL graphics, GREAT multiplayer, however single player is fixed so I got bored after a few months)
Sim City 3000(Liked it for a few weeks)
Cossacks(Great game, expansion's gonna rock it)
Diablo II:Lord Of Destruction(I really regret buying this game, just noticed the item graphics were worse than Arcanum's, and its so boring too, just whack whack and whack)
Emperor:Battle for Dune(thought it was cool, but really disappointed me)
Arcanum(Greatest RPGs I've played, but full of bugs)
Civilization III(Got lured by the comments to buy it, I didnt get disappointed)

When you say Nox, d'ya mean that walk-around RPG that came out a few years back, or has a new version been made. If the old one, I played it and also got bored of SP. Never played it on MP, cos I was on dial-up when I had it.

I just bought SimCity3000 a few weeks back. It's cool like all the SimCity's but my girlfriend is using it much more than me (she's better at it!)
