So, I don't know why it hasn't been posted here yet, but I feel that the atrocities committed in Norway needs a topic of its own for discussion. Have you all heard what has happened? If not, read this:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Norway_attacks

I was shocked when I first heard the news from a friend, but once I got hold of a newspaper and started reading, the shock turned to anger. How cold can people get? How far from sanity can people fall? I wanted to find this man and, even though it wouldn't have solved anything, kill him with my own hands.

This fools actions will only cause people to grow even more suspicious of eachother, and give the politicians yet another excuse to monitor our lives even more closely.

Where the hell is the world going to?

    Urgh
    /end of rant

First wave of news concerning the Norway bomb told 2 or 3 dead.
Already at that point I was more concerned and sad than when the earthquake leveled the towns in Haiti.
    I'm a terrible person...

Because when shit starts happening in the north then we know it's definitely no good.

You just beat me to it to write this kind of thread.

I was very angry when I heard it on the news and of course shocked that this kind of thing happen there in Norway. 89 people have been shot to death by the blood bath at the Socialists camp. Most were just 12 to 24 years old.

I have not read the manifest of this guy, yet. But I do know that he was a crazy fanboy of Geert Wilders.

    Hey. Bree is back.

One more die from the bombing? Wasn't it 7 at first?

So, here in Denmark we have this annoying guy who's getting a lot of heat for suggesting that someone might have been able to do something. He doesn't say he would have done different from those that were there, he just comes with a different viewpoint. I think that's fine, and I don't like him otherwise. Or is he out of line?

The best thing that you or other people should do, is keeping an eye on him. Just in case.

In what regard? Like the passengers did on Flight 93, or like things like the police, who barred ambulances from accessing the wounded for the sake of 'securing the area?'

I've heard flak directed at the way a lot of emergency agencies handled this, on the grounds that, well, they think it wasn't that great.

It always irritates me when people criticize the emergency services for their handling of these events. It's easy to sit back afterwards and say "Oh, they should have done X, Y or Z" but at the time the individuals there only have partial information, and have to do the best they can. It's not like they get to practise much either - these things are always one-offs that can't be predicted. For example, the police wouldn't have known how many gunmen there were, and if it turned out there were more than one, they could just as easily have been criticized if they had not secured the area.

Like Flight 93. I understand that they on that plane sat close, were mostly older and could probably better plan something, but this is a lone guy who, at times stood with his back to the whole island for a magazine change, 30 rounds of semi-automatic and then another magazine change (from witnesses on a boat he shot after). Maybe I just have a death wish and could imagine doing something, but I'm certain I would have spotted him from far away, even before he started shooting.

I think the police handled it pretty good, from what I know. They were first called around 30 minutes after, and then had to go out there and get things done. On top of that, they had all the chaos of the bomb. It only took two minutes from they were on the island until he was under arrest.

All in all, that was a pretty impressive stunt, setting a new high score in Europe for one-man shooting sprees.

Things might've been different if more people on the island had guns, but apparently Norway's gun laws are a bit anal about carrying weapons around for purposes other then hunting or sport shooting... Probably to prevent crazies from bringing guns to a crowded area and shooting up random people.

I'm not saying that saturating an area with weapons makes it safe from madmen (as in Fort Hood) but it would likely serve to limit the damage.

I mean seriously, do we live in such safe and stable times nowadays that we can leave a crowd of unarmed kids on an island with no police or security personnel there to react to... whatever might happen ? It could've very well been a madman with a blade, a group of punks beating up kids or another bomb explosion there, followed by a panic.

It looks to me like the authorities in charge of security got a bit too comfortable with peace and order, so much in fact that nobody thought anything could go seriously wrong on an island filled with teenagers discussing politics. News state that there was supposed to be a police officer there but there was none. That's one guy who was supposed to deal with over a hundred people on the tiny island, in case something went wrong, or catastrophically wrong, and he wasn't there anyway.

There was a cop there, but he was one of the first people shot. A woman came in with the shooter on the boat, and found him suspicious, so she went directly to the cop there and they approached him and were both shot.

Guns everywhere might, and only might, prevent or limit mass murder like this, but it'd also increase smaller shootings, like people finding out their significant other is cheating, people arguing, road rage, etc. People do a lot of things when they're angry, where they might otherwise calm down after a fight, at most.

We could also enforce new laws which prohibit individuals from keeping weapons at home. I don't understand why anyone would need a glock 17 at home anyway. I understand that the aspect of enforcing such a law would be nearly impossible, but that doesn't mean it isn't the right thing to do.
