Trouble installing the high res patch

I know, another noob question. Bear with me. Does anyone recognize this error message?



Pie to anyone who can help me; a cookie to anyone who tries.

 

Meh...

Do one of the following:

1. Run the patch as administrator by right-clicking on the file and selecting the option.
2. Turn off the UAC altogether. See here.
3. NEVER install your games to \Program Files. It's a protected folder.

 

Already did #1 and #3. Tried #2 and it worked! But the game wouldn't load so I uninstalled the high res patch. I tried reinstalling but got the same error message as last time. Odd, but progress.

At this point I think I'd be content without playing with the high res patch but I'll keep trying for a little while.

If you're using Windows 7.

Right-click on your desktop, choose "screen resolution". You should see 2 numbers in the "resolution" field, e.g. 1680x1050. Remember them.

Run the patch and enter the first number as "width" (e.g. 1680) and the second one as "height" (e.g. 1050). Feel free to skip the other choices, they're all optional.

Now the game should run.

 

i'll remember that if i can get the high res patch working again, it's giving me the same error message again.

if it comes down to it i'll just reinstall.

omg i finally got it to work

it wasn't working with the old unofficial patch i had, and since the latest version of it didn't work either, i had to manually extract the patch files into the directory

at which point the high res patch worked
