Ah sure, that's one great mistake from Troika, the technophobia background should be remade, making the player be afraid of Automatons, Mech Spiders, and some other technologies that use mechanics and/or advanced chemistry as a base. Like Mechanics(duh), Gun-smithing, Explosives, et cetera...

But technologies such as Herbology shouldn't be scaring the char's ass off.

I'm sure the technophobe character was made to be unable to pick up anything flagged by the game as technological. That is, anything with the gear on it in the item description. This made it easy to create a background for. I'm sure if you wanted to be super through you could go through and individually code shit that doesn't make sense (certain types of rocks? RUN AWAY), but that would be quite the undertaking and something that understandably didn't warrant the attention of the programmers at the time.

Troika taking the easy way out with implementing the Technophobia background is fully understandable. Doesn't mean that we shouldn't laugh at the hilarious effect of design-related decisions, though.

For example - mushrooms. Turns out they are more technological than Tesla Rods.

You wanna be a technophobe? Then just don't pick up anything technological.

Well, this may work, but you know, it's like cheating, I don't like cheating on RPG's, especially Arcanum that deserves my entire respect.

It's not cheating, it's actually the exact opposite - purposefully restraining yourself from picking up any technological items.

    I would call it roleplaying.

The fact that programmers were lazy it's not the players fault.

Well, I'm currently playing with a technophobe character.

And it's not very good, of course it's fun and hard, but the flaws make me want to start all over.

Perhaps the person making A:WIP (is it rroyo?) should improve the technophobia background, although it seems very boring.

Yes, I want to, but the problem is that I don't understand bull about editing backgrounds.

Is there any tutorial around here?

Technophobia (like many other backgrounds with... unusual effects) is hard-coded. I somehow doubt that Arthur_Vaapeli is an ASM wizard.

You are right Drog, but as DarkFool wrote, I may find something that helps me at the Modding Section.

Of course it won't go exactly as I planned, but I'll see what I can do.

Background editing is a little complex to learn, but very easy to do.

Yes, after you master the basics it's even kinda easy. I'm very satisfied with my results, although there are always some flaws, but that happens to everyone :)
