I'm finally in Shanghai, the heart of the PRC. Yahoo!

I'm going to perfect my Chinese skills for a year or two and then either continue my studies here or get a job.

    Awesome? Y/Y?

Good luck with all that. You be sure and let me know how everything turns out.

Oh, and try Googling for Tianmenen Square.

I did some voluntary work in Shanghai, it's a nice enough place to live for a while but there is an underlining feel of crime everywhere you go. As long as you keep yourself to yourself you should be fine.

Congratulations, Drog. I was wondering: What for kind of study are you going to do in China, and is the Chinese language very difficult to learn? Also, is Shanghai the worth to visit as a tourist?

If it's any harder than the English language, I'm pretty sure you're screwed Arthgon.

The only Chinese phrase to hitherto stick in my head is Wo dai airen, and that's only because I had a brief crush on Shampoo from Ranma ½ during my formative years.

I have not any problems with speaking or reading the English language, the problem is sometimes the written grammar.

Enjoy China! My grandmother went to China once, but I've never been there. I hear there are a lot of chins, especially in their phone books.

    Thanks, guys, you're true bros!

Sorry, I couldn't reply sooner, I still don't have the internet at my place.

Not sure yet, I guess I'll just grab an opportunity as it comes. For now, I'm going to concentrate on the language.

The pronouncation is a bitch (it's a tonal language, after all), but the grammar is very simple. The writing may be hard for some people (especially if they have poor visual memory), but it's very straight-forward for me after Japanese (many characters are the same, just different readings and sometimes slightly different meanings).

It's pretty good, but Japan is probably more fun travel wise.

Shanghai is actually pretty safe. The laws are strict, so muggings/etc are mostly non-existant. I've heard there are pickpockets and the like though, but nothing more serious than in any other big city.

BTW, they even have the Young Pioneers and an equivalent of Komsomol here. Can you believe it? It's like a time machine to the good ol' days.

The climate is pretty tough for me so far, though, it's extremely humid here, but I'm getting used to it.

P.S. Feel free to ask me anything China related. I'll try to answer, as soon as I have another chance to login here.

A friend of mine is moving to Beijing tomorrow actually. Hopefully she enjoys it as much as you.
