Hello. I've got a few questions, and I can't seem to find anywhere else to ask about it. I've been playing Arcanum for several years, single-player style. Done all the quests that I could think/heard/seen of. Twisted the game in so many ways, by killing this and that, and hoping for a fun reaction. Done some own remakes here and there. However, I haven't playd Arcanum Online. Been reading about it a bit of everywhere, and talks about the Arcanum server is down. If that is the reason, why haven't anyone of you Arcanum lovers tried to set up a Public server? Don't know if this have been brought up before (I'm sure it has) but I'm way to lazy, to check around. (Seen how most treads here are from 2004+) Ivan.
Posting before someone else gets ahold of this thread and mocks you: Arcanum's online function is utter rubbish that was shoehorned in by Sierra executives. Nobody here has any interest whatsoever in it. Do use the search function though.
Yeah I remember trying to play online when Arcanam had first come out, was my first experience of onlineness of games, it wasn't a very good one. Never again.
There was a guy who once got it running over LAN, and ran a few games. I think the issue came down to the fact that we didn't have the server-side hosting/managing software for Arcanum, and no way to duplicate/recreate it.
I know that Arcanum wasn't the most stable and used online game, cause of bugs and so much more, that is why I wonder, why no one has tried to put up a stable server with the required software to run it. Duh.
No it was worse than that. # Theres no world map so fast travel is impossible # You can't advance time to recover fatigue or sleep to regain health # Becuase you can't advance time unless you advance forward a day in real time (ie. actually wait for the day to pass in game) merchants don't get in new stock # Since realtime combat requires that you be the fastest clicker in the entire world and turn based can lock you out of some fights entirely if you aren't the first round and that guy ends it combat is quite limited. # Several other complaints for another time
Yes. Because there are other players in the game and not just you anything that would advance time and thus affect them as well is disabled.
Clearly there needed to be a system to resolve this, perhaps a sort of query. X wants to advance time, do you approve? Also I guess you could fast travel as a group and have someone be a designated leader. I dunno, I am sure there are ways to get around these limitations.
If you have the know-how to design and integrate such a system into Arcanum, you'll have my undying respect. As it is, I believe the only person with such capacity just recently fled this place for reasons semi-unknown.
