I noticed a strange thing today.

In Arcanum Eye Glasses exist but they only help if you have a Perception of 6 or less.

There's no way using standard backgrounds for this to happen. Some give Per -1 but none give Per -2. EG without custom backgrounds, every character you play will have perfect eye sight!

Anyone know if there's even any characters in the game with Perception less than 7?

Poor Raymond in Ashbury.... he must not get much business at all.

I seriously did some testing, just for this thread. And you actually need to have 7 OR less perception. So they aren't completely useless.

    Thanks Yuki.
I was going by the Prima Guide which said 6 or worse Perception to use them.

Still means only Bookworm, Professional Knife Tosser, and Ran Away with the Circus need them but this makes me feel a little better.

I can just use the Bookworm background for my Geeky Glasses wearing invetnor :)

Can one be damaged in such a way as to reduce his perception?

I can't remember any that type of damage, and it's not too likely, since there are no such things as aimed shots to the eyes.
There is one curse which lowers perception, but you'll not very likely to ever encounter it.
Plus there is always alcohol, but it's effects are of course temporary.
Naturally helmets decrease perception, but that's no use since you can't have both a helmet and glasses on.
I think those are all of the in-game perception decreases. They may be some hexed items lowering perception, but it's not like any sane person would use them.

Just checked out of curiosity. Indeed, when your perception is 8 or higher, glasses only lower your perception, but when you get drunk, voila, glasses actually boost up your perception. Now that's some dioptre magic.

Yuki beat me to it, and I didn't even need to research it. I knew it was 7 or below. Damned time zones. Ah, but did Yuki know that if you have 8 or more, it decreases by 1? Shit...fucking time zones....
And there's nothing for the magickally allergic dwarf mage....nothing...he's so emo.

Unless you're into ranged combat or thieving, perception is practically useless anyway.

So unless you're into two of the five major elements in the game, you don't really need it.

It's not even 2/5. My archers have done quite well with base PE, and Spot Traps I've never even bothered with. This essentially leaves Firearms and Prowling as the only skills in the game you'll ever need PE for.

I always thought it strange that bows required DX when firearms required PE.

    :cricket sounds:

    Okay, forget about that one.

I used to be state champion archer for my age group, with both recurve and compound. Trust me, your ability to keep yourself steady and on-target is far more important than your ability to see that far. A lot of archers who shoot more than about thirty-fourty meters use telescopes.

(You may think I'm joking, but I'm not. I was trained by the one and only Clint Freeman - Olympic Gold Medallist, thangyewverramuch - and he used a telescope to see anything past the thirty meter line. Being long-sighted, that was never an issue for me.)

Strange, when I was a boy I used to stand out on a field and have Shaolin monks shoot arrows at me. The task was to catch them with my bare hands which I mastered quickly. The next level of development was to fling them back at the same speed however I gave up my studies in pursuit of one day being that guy who sits at the end of the bar telling everyone it was my idea but so and so stole it years ago.

You should have stuck around, because the lessons after that involve using your mind to stop the arrows.

I say "stick around" in the sense that you'd stick around and watch without participating, because watching Shaolin monks culminate the greatest practical joke ever by finally shooting real arrows at some poor sucker who is concentrating on stopping them with his mind is just.....well, its just great. Every arrow sticking out of the torso of some poor idiot is like popcorn for the soul.

Jokes aside, actually saw Shaolin monks perform a few years back, some of the things they manage to do is really spectacular.

Unless you saw David Carradine among them, they weren't real.

... of which about 2% have any usage in real combat, where flashy choreography will get you killed and it's all about being practical and determined.

Crane kick < your average kick to the groin.
