Holy fuck. I'm glad you got out of it, and impressed that you managed to do it all by yourself. Must have been hard.

I love how countries are talking about banning int import of pork produced over this.
You don’t get it from breakfast food your morons.
You get it from handling live pigs/swine.
    You know, those squealy-squirmy-grease-up-and-let-run-through-the-fair kind.
    Not the smoked-peppered-fry-in-a-skillet kind.

RE: pessimism. My Drill Sergeant taught me one thing up front.

    Thank you.

It was indeed very hard. The hardest part was that I had to pick up my life again, when I was clean.

Back on topic (SHOCK HORROR! Xiao getting on topic!!)...

We're starting to use thermal scanners to detect possible swine flu sufferers from tomorrow. This is both hardcore and fucked up. It's awesome that technology can do this now, but kinda frightening at the same time.

Beware if it evolves into sheep flu, in which case you're truly fucked.

and back on topic again - while WHO carefully nurtures the panic, west europe is shivering, although there are very few reported cases; and as of 30.04.2009 here in germany, all 3 confirmed patients are out of danger, 1 has recuperated completely.
oseltamivir (tamiflu trademark) and zanamivir (relenza trademark) are actually working, and the paranoix here have stockpiled enough to treat about 30-50% of the population, so europe is probably NOT going to have millions dead as after the "spane flu".
now let's just pray that the virus doesn't make it to africa and south asia - the population densities there, combined with lack of medical institutes, might make this end nasty.
and of course let's hope that nobody catches a regular flu AND swine flu at the same time, allowing the cross-species flu gene swap.

So is this new flu naturally lethal to humans or something ? Why is it a big deal ?

both the swine-human flu and human flu are not highly lethal, most deaths being from pneumonia complications. the problem with flu (both kinds) is the fast spreading and high infectivity.
the current problem is that swine H1N1 flu does NOT respond to regular human flu vaccination and therefore might spread faster and affect more people. in general, flu viruses tend to swap genes in host, thus producing new sub-types and lowering overall resistance to them in the population. a genetically new flu that already transfers human-->human adds to the gene pool for this gene swap.

*a little sci-fi here* and there is of course the theoretical "xenesis" chance. this would require a person to get human flu, swine flu AND have transplanted swine tissue in them at the same time. this would theoretically allow a gene swap between 2 flu species and porcine endo-retrovirus PERV, producing something spreading like flu but more lethal by orders of magnitude *sci-fi ends*

The latest update from WHO in case anyone cares.
    --------------------------
1 May 2009 -- The situation continues to evolve rapidly. As of 06:00 GMT, 1 May 2009, 11 countries have officially reported 331 cases of influenza A(H1N1) infection.

The United States Government has reported 109 laboratory confirmed human cases, including one death. Mexico has reported 156 confirmed human cases of infection, including nine deaths.

The following countries have reported laboratory confirmed cases with no deaths - Austria (1), Canada (34), Germany (3), Israel (2), Netherlands (1), New Zealand (3), Spain (13), Switzerland (1) and the United Kingdom (8).

Further information on the situation will be available on the WHO website on a regular basis. WHO advises no restriction of regular travel or closure of borders. It is considered prudent for people who are ill to delay international travel and for people developing symptoms following international travel to seek medical attention, in line with guidance from national authorities.

There is also no risk of infection from this virus from consumption of well-cooked pork and pork products. Individuals are advised to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water on a regular basis and should seek medical attention if they develop any symptoms of influenza-like illness.
    --------------

BTW: From what I've heard, the one death in the US was from am infected infant newly arrived from Mexico where it contracted H1N1. I personnaly do not count this as a US death count since it came in sick and died shortly there after.
