Does wearing a shield have an impact on character's Strength, Dexterity or Speed? Lets assume the encumbrance level is "none".
Shields don't affect your stats (unless there's a magickal shield out there I didn't know about) but weapons generally have a higher Strength requirement if you wield a shield or lantern in your off-hand.
By the way, what happens with your damage and chance-to-hit when you dont have enough Strength for wielding a weapon?
If you don't have enough strenght to wield a weapon then you deal less damage. I'm not sure what happens to chance to hit but It's probably lower.
I didn't know that you deal less damage when Strength isn't high enough for a given weapon. I do know that the chance to hit goes down by 5% for each point of Strength that is missing. Easy to live with, really, but quite annoying to see the warning.
But why is it annoying? It makes sense. If you are a scrawny little elf girl, a heavy weapon such as a claymore should be nigh impossible to wield with any accuracy.
Actually, if anything, it is a very fair mechanic indeed. Some other games simply don't let a character wield weapons if their strength level lies under the strength requirements of the weapon. But, Arcanum gives the choice to the player to decide if their character will still wield the weapon even though there will be penalties.
It's the warning that's annoying. And I'm not suggesting that it's a bad thing, just that it's annoying to constantly be reminded that the character is too weak to use the weapon without penalty. Like a "fasten seatbelt" light, blinking whenever I check the inventory.
It really is annoying but I guess it's necessary for us to know that we are not using the weapon in an optimal fashion since we are incapable of wielding it efficiently...
