We barely get to see any of the cities and towns on the continent. Their has to be settlements above the area of the Grey Mountains, theirs a Gnome shrine there why not Gnome towns? Halfling ones? Their has to be more towns around the map.

More of an explanation on Vendigroth. We see gears in the Bessie Toone mine from Vendigroth, I would love to know how they got there and if Vendigroth had settlements there. The ruins all over the place you find in the wastes and the penal colony make me seriously want to know more and more.

I would of liked to seen and participated in Maximilian going against the King of Cumbria.

I would of liked to see more backstory on the characters too, especially the ones with voices. Torian Kel always seemed like a neat guy to me and I wanted to learn more.

I'll post more, if you all have any info let me know!

I agree with everything here except for the Torian Kel one. If you talk to him, you pretty much get all of his background - a mindless barbarian/warrior of an ancient organization of necromancers.

You get to see a lot, and with rryros A:WIP you get to see more. There aren't any settlings above the grey mountains because of the wilderness of the land and the protection of the dwarves/elves.

There are no gnome cities in Arcanum. The shrine is a relic from ancient times, probably built even before the Age of Legends. There was perhaps a time when places like that existed, but that time came and went with the industrial revolution. Tarant is a human/gnome city.

The last three points about Vendigroth, Maximilian and follower backgrounds only have one answer. You aren't meant to know EVERYTHING. You have to use your imagination. How did that gear get to Shrouded Hills? Nobody knows, but it indicates that the mine is OLD. Lianna rescues Maximilian probably long after you've finished the game. The backgrounds of your followers are sometimes revealed in detail and sometimes not. Use your imagination to fill in the rest.

    Welcome to the forum, Gethric!

Since Wolfsbane was good enough to mention my hack, I'll go ahead and chime in.

The wilderness above the Grey Mountains will be getting three to four communities and a couple more stand alone adventures added to the region. This is in addition to the dungeon that's already in place - Acerarak's Tomb - and a pictorial "backstory" about the thief at the Ruby Glen.

I am, however, having a hard time getting the mushroom-shaped Gnome houses to convert from pictures to .art files without a horrible color distortion, so the Gnome town may be the last thing I build.

A:WIP has added two halfling communities already and two more are to be built - Leahbo needs a complete redo.

Vendigroth - I've added some coastal ruins to explore and have been creating a backstory in which the Iron Clan mines were being shut down during the destruction of Vendigroth, which lead to the founding of the Wheel Clan, the city dwarves of Caladon and Tarant, and even the still-unnamed clan that went to Cattan.

The area around the Iron Clan was quite active at this time, so the chance of Vendigrothian gear finding it's way to that side of the continent, surviving the ages, and ultimately into a mine is not too big of a stretch.

If I do my job right, there'll be several chapters added to the history of that time.

Maximilian's return: So would I! At the moment it's still a dream though.

The follower's backstories: Other than possibly creating homes that you can visit, I hadn't given this any serious thought.
Virgil, Jayna, and Torian are pretty well fleshed out. Most of the others are reasonably well done, but would need a fair amount of tinkering to finish.
I'll admit, I'm actually a bit hesitant about doing any serious work on rounding out the other followers due to the sheer amount of other work I need to finish or do in other areas.

Hope this is something you were wanting to hear.

The only problem with that is the theme park setting that likely ensues. I'd rather have locations be relevant to the story and the quests thereof + a bunch of fun stuff there for exploration rather than a forced attempt to let every race and faction have their own little town.

Gnomes having mushrooms as homes??? In Arcanum they are the top of the nobility and even the wild gnomes I see more living in burrows like halflings than in just mushrooms. They aren't pixies ;)

And actually you can find more already on the device on Shade Beach on the penal colony that is the Isle of Despair. Their are 2 newspapers in Vendigroth that talk about it.

Yeah, Gnomes are the millionaires of Arcanum. Shouldn't they live in mansions?

Yes they should. Mansions in big cities. Ashbury, Caladon or Tarant.

Some gnomes can't even afford mushrooms so they sleep in people's gardens.

We can never know everything that has happened in history, fictional or not... unless somebody manages to create a flux capacitor and attach it to a DeLorean. I hear they've started production on it again, the DeLorean, not the fictional plot device.

I'll be sure to have to try your project when it's finished, rroyo.

Haha, look before this goes out of hand let me explain myself a bit better:

I tried to put my view in the world of Arcanum. Naturally not even all Gnomes there are rich, but those that aren't are more logical to live in normal house or something similiar than in mushrooms seeing they are well a 'common' race and not considered pixies.
In some other fantasies they are considered this, though they then tend to live in burrows like halflings. So for those fantasies it isn't wrong, but I think it is a bit inconsistent for Arcanum.

OK - I'll keep my eye open for something better.

I'll save the mushrooms for those Kites with Gargamel....

Hello there guys! I can't believe that I've been living in darkness all this time! I didn't know that a site like this existed! and I'm so surprised to find out that the community for this jewel-of-a-game is still alive and kicking...

I'm just getting to learn how to update my game...

I don't really know how or where to start...

I've had Arcanum for three years now and I never bothered to search the NET for any resource. And since none of my acquaintances knew that this game actually existed, I never bothered.

But kind sirs, will you please point a poor soul like me to the right direction?

... Alright. Reading this thread has reminded me of a couple of things... namely, why I wanted to write Arcanum fanfiction. I'll get right on that. Time to release my Arcanum-Muses and watch the fun. :D

^ Not that you care, but I am a fictional theorist.

I've got some theories on the magic/technology relationship, magic, mana and etherealness/corporealness.

I lack flavor in my words, so I can't compose anything decent myself, but if you are interested in the mechanics of my fictional theories, I could pass their content onto you.
