    Hi all!

I'm about ready to explore Vendigroth (after the Master Persuasion quest), and have 1 more companion slot to fill. My party is now:
    - Virgil
    - Soggy
    - Magnus
    - Dog
    - Sebastian
    - Raven

and my character is pretty much a pure mage, Master of Force, with high persuasion and an expert in pickpocket. I know, it's a powerbuild (for my first time through).

Which of the two is more fun to have along (because of dialog or interactions with other NPCs/locations)? I think either will do well enough for combat, although Payne's strength is too low to wield the best guns. He can make some healing salves, though....

BTW, why is it that all the companion master gunslingers have too low strengths to wield the best firearms without penalty? They tend to critical miss and hurt themselves or the guns...

Personally, I like Payne more simply due to his over-the-top personality and cool voice acting, but Loghaire has some interesting dialogue with Magnus you may not want to miss.

My suggestion; just pick the one you think is the coolest of the two. You're a Force Mage and have Dog and Sogg onboard already, more combat effectiviness is pretty redundant now.

    Combat effectivness is never redundant!

Personally, I prefer Loghair. He's awesome; fun dialouge and beastial prowress in combat.

    Thanks!

I went with Payne since he seemed like such a character, plus I know I'll come across some cool guns for him to use, and he can make healing slave for the other techs. Yeah I figure I have enough melee capability already, so Loghaire seemed redundant. Magnus with the pyro axe, and Soggy with the Sword of Batar kick ass. The party seems way overpowered already.

    SPOILERS BELOW

Are the conversations with Magnus and Loghaire in the void? I already found the Iron Clan location...

Not that I remember. It was the Iron Clan dialogue I was referring to.

Also, dwarves (with the exception of Magnus) should always receive the Dark Helm treatment. Especially when you find a suit of Small Arcane Plate Mail you just don't know what to do with.

The Dark Helm treatment? You mean making them evil and permanently boosting resistance to magic?

I guess Magnus would leave the party if I did that?

Magnus doesn't really care about what alignment Loghaire or anyone else has, the only alignment he cares about is yours.

The reason why I like to have dwarven fighters use the dark helm is because it boosts their Magickal Aptitude which makes magickal gear, like Arcane swords and platemail, work better.

OK, right, i was thinking of some other cursed object.

Doesn't the helm affect Magnus's alignment if you put it on him? I thought that would annoy him.

Good idea about increasing his magical aptitude. I have him wearing the iron clan armor, and have yet to find small arcane armor (I think).

Actually, I think it makes him whine less.

You should go with the Iron Clan armor, though. If not only for it's awesomeness.

Yeah, it looked like about the best armor I've found yet. The hammer I passed on vs. the pyrotechnic axe...

BTW, I would have had a hell of time comparing item stats without the prima and gamebanshee item guides. The item guide here seems to missing a lot of items.

I just wish item stats weren't so poorly described in game. It makes the game a lot more tedious to play...

You shouldn't get too obsessed with the stats, though. Most of the time I don't even care. I use items that I find cool, rather than effective.

It's the horrible side effect of playing Diablo II on the hardest difficulty, and IWD on HoF mode.
