Ok, exactly which followers are FREE?

Free meaning: Don't count against the follower limit.

Some people have said that Dante is free.

Not true, at least not in my game. I had max followers and he would not join ( saying I had a full party or something ).

I have also heard Jormund is free. Not true, I had max followers and he said I have too many people.

The only one I know for sure is free is Dog Worthless Mutt.

Are there any others?

if any major characters are "free," then it's a bug.

I can't remember if this was fixed way back when patches were coming out, but I think either Raven or Zan are free in certain circumstances.

 

Well in my last game ( before this ) I got Sebastian for free.

I had a 3 follower limit.

I had Sogg, Magnus, Dante and Dog ( doesnt count ).

I killed the orc gang member and Sebastian joined me. Finished the all of them. And yes I still had a party limit of 3 ( said so on my screen ).

Then the next game he refused to join because I had a full party, so WTH?

I tried that with Dante, didn't work.

 

Yeah, the bug is often that it doesn't follow the follower limit when the NPC joins, but if you ask them to rejoin, it will check the limit. This sucks when you realize that you got a follower for free, then you have to go in the IOD or Dernholm pits and have everyone leave, and then can't get the followers back.

I'm gonna check this in the DLGs for the bug fix.

 

I'm sure that in 1.0.7.0, Loghair was free.

I don't remember the rest, unfortunately, but there was a bunch of them.

The latter link also says something interesting:

"Anyhow the bug let me to go though walls. I was about to pickpocket a key from someone. I started moving and while moving I pressed pick pocket and on that guy."

Well, given that I only know of one 'maze' off the top of my head (the ancient one), I'ma go hunt for a sword in it! *loads elephant rifle*

 

Tollo Underhill, the halfling in the Dernholm pit, is free if you teleport out of that dungeon. But it's really not worth the trouble.
