Hey i got a REALLY BIG question. does anybody know where i can find something to make my in-game character look different? like a character skin mod?
Nope. The characters are made up of thousands of tiny pictures so there's no practical way to do that.
These are sprites, not polygons. You would have to draw the new look for your character frame by frame and then find some way to add those files back into the game. Even palette swaping would be pretty time consuming given the number of frames used for each PC/NPC/Critter.
This is also the reason why customizing your skin/hair/whatever just can't be done. I remember how disappointed I was for not being able to give my elf the proper drow colours.
I felt pretty let down the first time I realized there were no sprites for top hats. What's the use of dressing like Papa Shongo if you can't look like him?
There is a top hat. You can buy it at a clothier, and I'm almost absolutely certain that it has a sprite.
It won't alter the way your character looks though, just like helmets, glasses, boots etc won't show up either.
Technically I'm right; There's a sprite for your equipment screen, though I was completely off when it came to actually seeing it on the character. Well that sucks...but you can still get the top hat at various clothiers around Arcanum. How else would you make the Chapeau of Electromagnetic Inversion?
Well, yeah, you can buy it, and it does "tilt" a certain way when you equip it, I believe (just like every other armor). It does have that cool metallic thing around it, so it does have a unique sprite. Also, that Chapeau is one of the best helmets for bow/gun characters, as it has an awesome 20 DR and has no perception penalty. Charges aren't that hard to find or carry around.
If you by "tilt" mean the force field that appears around your character sprite I believe it's pretty much unique for the Chapeau.
Well I know this is a bit late in coming, but I just finished the game last week...so I wasnt ready to try any editing befor that. There IS a way to change your in-game character texture, but that is limited to changing the way you look to some other in-game monster/unique npc. The major shortcoming of this method is that most monsters/npcs(unique) have only 1 or 2 modes of attack.....so if you want to make yourself look like an automaton who attacks with a 2 handed sword, you'l likely need a LOT more patience(in fact, I havent found out the way to do this yet). Ok...I'll show you how to make your female PC look like one of those Qintarra elves.....this is just an example, you can do a lot more stuff this way.. 1) Unpack your DAT files and make a backup of the data\art directory in case you mess up something.. 2) make a test directory anywhere 3) go to the sierra\arcanum\data\art\unique_npc directory, and copy all files in the folder effvg to your test directory. (To know why, see the postscript note) 4) rename all the files that you copied(in the test directory) to HMFLAX*.art....i.e. EFFVGXAa.art should be renamed into HMFLAXAa.art. (Again, see postscrpit note). This will be a bit tedious if you are not fluent with DOS. 5) copy all the files in the test directory to the data\art\critter\hmf directory..rewrite as necesary. Postscript notes : 1. In this example, your female PC will look like an elven huntress as long as you wear any kind of leather armor....however, use only bows, or your character will revert looks as soon as you go into combat. 2. in this example, we copied the files from the effvg directory to hmf directory because effvg is the directory containing the artwork for the unique elf npc, and hmf folder contains those for a human female. 3. to know which folder contains artwork for which npc/critter, simply open your WorldEd, and while adding a new critter, check the different artworks available. Each one has the corresponding filename segment written below it. Phew....if someone can explain the above procedure better, or if someone already has tried this and discovered new tricks, please post.(like that automaton with a 2 handed sword one...)
