Now do you think it would be possible to play a Elf Tech? Well...I know its Possible but would the disadvantage be just to much of a bastard? Thrush? or full blown 5 year down the road AIDS? Just thought it would be interesting
You know, the only elven technologist at any real disadvantage would be the elven gunslinger. But Arcanum is an easy game, so not even that build should have any problem completing it.
Another question. My characters tend to (unintentionally) wind up evil. I'd like to make an all tech squad. Apart from the cowardly gunslinging (as in literally throwing his guns and running for the hills) gnome who doesn't seem to care whether you cure cancer or abuse old women, who else would I be looking at being in my bunch of likely lads in the early stages of the game?
The only difference I ever noticed was that you made more money out of those trivia contests in taverns when the game was set on hard.
True. Some monsters can take a little more damage, and gets a little harder to hit, put apart from that it's as easy as whatever. But... Why play elven tech? Are you just looking for a sucky character, or what? The game's, as previously noticed, not much of a challange anyway.
As I said before, the only elven tech character that would suck slightly is the one who relies heavily on technological skills such as firearms and repair, because of the elven -2 penalty to those (although I suspect you could still attain mastery in most of them). There's no keeping you from investing the in the technological disciplines, and once you've three points of tech your base aptitude won't matter anymore. Ironically, an elven explosives/thrower would be better at that than any dwarf.
No I'm not trying to play a 'sucky' character. In most RPG's I play as an Elf (where possible) and I wish to continue the trend here. I also enjoy playing characters that don't follow the stereotypes that so many people adhere to e.g I'd play a Halfling barbarian, a Half - Orc bard and the like. I KNOW half-ogre's are the best in CQC and I KNOW that Dwarves are the masters of tech, but that isn't appealing to me in the slightest.
Detracting from stereotypes can be a great way to add some flavour to any game. Elven wizards and dwarven berserkers, while cool in their own right, lack in originality compared to totally unexpected characters such as ogre bards and gnome warriors. I'd love a game which took such things into account and commented your choice of character ("an ogre archmage? What the FUCK is the world coming to?")
Well one dwarven mage was enough for me, the double fatigue penalty is something I never want to go through again.
Yeah, the tech-magick schism between elves and dwarves isn't really balanced. Elves can dabble in tech without too much difficulty (the classic smithy/mechanics fighter approach works wonders with elves), but I usually tire of the double fatigue penalty dwarves are given once I reach Tarant or so.
I haven't even bothered to try the dwarven mage just because of that. My brother tried it (he's not very good at Arcanum) and got totally killed at the crash site. He harmed to wolves, and then he fainted and died. I laughed.
