My first character was mostly a sword-swinging tough guy. He had a lot of trouble with the rock and fire creatures, since they screw over the armour and weapons. However, I'm now playing a character who uses magic more than anything else, and I've got the spell Disintegrate, which splatters those monsters instantly. No armour and weapon damage. I love Disintegrate! If I could do that spell in real life, I'd be Disintegrating things all day. No parking spaces? Fine. Disintegrate that Honda! A queue at the bank? Fine. Disintegrate them! I'd be a menace. :)

1)Use indestructable weapons- axes or Arcane swords.
2)Keep spare armor suits with you when you go against such creatures. If you're normal size, wear Dread Armor while in combat.

Someone would cast a Quench Life on you rather quickly, I think.

Quench Life has never worked really well for me. Disintegrate is just amazing.

I've never bothered with Disintegrate. My mages did just fine with Harm plus Haste and an occasional Fireflash.

Tempus Fugit + Haste Pot + Haste = God. Oh and I suppose I spam harm too.

Disintegrate works well, however, it simply isn't interesting. It kills off all their items and the sound gets annoying. I prefer my NPCs to hate me before I kill them ^__^_

I wonder if you can sneak up and backstab Kerghan...

Here's one way, incase he auto-talks to you so you can't backstab him-- remove all your characters from the group and get a master in prowling. When you get him to attack you, starting prowling and he should lose track of your presence. Voila! Rinse and repeat.

Nah, the harm-spam is still the best way of using magic. Just become the master of Dark Necromantics and fetch an Arcane staff and you'll be unstopable. Your fatigue will never run out.

Master of Dark Necro? Why bother, Harm is already cheap enough. Become a Master of Temporal- now THAT is worthwhile. Haste plus Tempus Fugit plus Haste pot plus half a dozen Arcane staves in your backpack to change as they deplete- and Harm, Harm, Harm... :D

True. They really made a misstake making that spell. The game's to easy when having it.

I find that rather than helping yourself with Time and Haste stuff, just give it to a melee competent, like Dog. He already has a high speed, hit rate and damage. I use haste pots and Tempus Fugit on him when getting levels from Liam's endless-amount-of-monsters-portal. He usually kills off all three mobs in one turn in turn-based.

It's easier for you to do it because:

1)You're often significantly faster that Dog (especially if you are a halfling or an elf wearing Enchanted War Boots)
2)You don't waste action points on running if you are a ranged attacker or a mage.
3)You usually have the first move.

But why play turn based when you're a magician? I find it more effektive to justharm-spam in realtime. You can fire off a hell a more harms that way.

I always play turn based, it allows for more flexibility in combat. You can change attack spells, throw Stun grenades, you can keep greater distance from your enemies while shooting at them and you can heal and restore fatigue to your followers as the combat goes.

Turn-based is best for grenade-throwers, gadgeteers and in some melee situations (for example, quest for mastery in guns) and realtime is  for magicians (mostly those who use primarily harm and fireball) and melee warriors

Real time is actually more useful for mages than for anyone else, for reasons of fatigue control. You can down a fatigue potion or change the staff when you see you're running low.

That just depends on how fast you are while playing. I'm probably faster than you two (not saying that I'm any better. But I seriously doubt that I'm not)

Oh yeah? You may well be faster than me, I don't use real time combat at all- but can you change staves in real time combat without losing control over what goes on on the battlefield? Can you change spells and targets fast enough to throw a Stun spell at each of the undead in the scroll room of the Ancient temple before their filthy decomposing hands leave stains on your fancy Smoking Jacket and proceed to exterminate them with Harm, occasionally Stunning them anew if they dare wake up? Especially if the above procedure includes changing your depleted Mage's staff to a fresh one from the inventory?

I have a mage but I only used turn-based. Real time is a mess, honestly I'm surprised anyone is able to use it at all.

I have it set to turn-based, but sometimes it'll randomly switch to real time, and when that happens I'm either dead (happened several times early in the game) or my followers have killed everything before I get a chance to even click on an enemy.

I use realtime most of the time, and switch to turn based for harder encounters. The reason is simply that anything easy is quickly dispatched by my followers, a minute here, a minute there, adds up to a lot of time saved. Easy in this case includes things like the entire P Shuyler(sp?) dungeon at level 7(with 4 followers. Virgil, Sogg, Jayna and Magnus.)
