I recently gave an old copy of Arcanum to a friend who after three attempts at the game has managed to be killed by the rats in the cave at the crash site every time.

The last time was using a Half Ogre melee type on turn based combat. So I'm at a loss as to how to make the game any easier.

    Suggestions?

Real time won't make it any easeier, not for a new player in any case.

Send him to Shrouded Hills to get better equipment first?

Though honestly, sounds like there must be something pretty wrong there to get killed so fast with a character like that. What was Virgil doing?

I'm curious, is this friend just new to CRPGs in general? I know it's looked down on my most hardcore RPGers, but something like Diablo II might be a better choice for a newbie. You just click things and they die.

I don't know, I was always under the impression that an elven mage was easier. Start out with harm and get your MA as high as possible and you'll be having bloodbaths anywhere you go. Once you get Fireflash and Disintegrate, nothing remains standing.

Solara he isn't new to the genre, although he has been concentrating on strategy games for the past 18 months or so.

DE, I think you may have it there, I'd forgotten about how ridiculously easy harm makes the game I'll just get him to use a gnome or an elf with an 'Only Child' background.

If this doesn't work I'm taking my game back and smashing his computer.

But I'm just trying to help this guy finish the damn game, not master it the first time around.

Besides if you've got a level 50 mage with mastery in force the end of the game is a whole lot quicker, killing all those Bludgeoners can get tiresome.

    ....

    Is he mentally handicapped?

A half-orc with two points in melee makes the start of the game really easy also. If you buy a quality sword from the store.

My character is a human who started off with nothing but that energy shield spell and a point in persuasion. I just let Virgil do most of the fighting.

Have you actually stood and watched over the guy's shoulder while he played? Maybe you can spot what he's doing wrong.

That would probably solve it, but can we at least pretend that I have better things to do with my time?

I don't see why not, I pretend most of you are hideously deformed children most of the time anyway.

Have you looked at the difficulty level in the options menu? Maybe it's set to hard or something...

I'll check, but surely sewer rats aren't affected that much by the difficulty setting.

Also, by using a mage type with harm he has now successfully managed to get stuck at the Bessie Toone Mine.

Stuck as in he can't physically leave, or he doesn't realize you need to talk to Bessie?

Get Sogg, send him and Virgil in first, and harm the thing. Always worked for me.

Or gain more experience by spending several days (and nights) in the woods of Shrouded Hills, if you don't want to spend points on Charisma to get Sogg...

Or use a half-orc with the 'Raised in the Pits' background. That's how I started out. The first time I played the game, I killed Virgil right off the bat, because I didn't like him. By the time I got to Caladon, everybody attacked me on site (thanks to the bengelian scurge and some kind of barbarian armor), so I had to start over.
