Does anyone know what spells he has? As I keep leveling I swear I saw him shoot a fireball at a monster the other day. How do I check what level he is?

Am I wrong for giving him a sword and chainmail instead of a magic robe? When I give him a robe he prefers it over nice chainmail..

    And what is Zen Virgil?

You could either ask him about it (should be an option like "I want to know something about you" etc). Or, you could right-click on his picture and go to character sheet.

Sometimes, a nice magick robe will give you a higher total defense than chainmail will - followers will typically wear the best stuff they've got on them. But sometimes NPC's preferences suck, so...

without altering his lvling scheme, Virgil is basically a melee warrior with low-end ST and gains white necro (heal) spells.

if he threw a fireball it was because he had a scroll or maybe a weapon with a spell included in it.

Zen Virgil is somthing you'll find out about later maybe, telling you might ruin some of the cooler parts of the story line.

as for him wanting robes, that probably means the magic robes offer him better resistences from certain damages over the chainmail.

i personally altered virgil to gain more str, lose his lamers skills (lvl 1 picklock ect) and gain a resurecct spell in later lvls, which IMHO makes him one of the best followers for magic users.

How did you alter Virgil? Was it through the character and party editor?

Can you edit him into a dark spellcaster that throws damage spells? And if so, will he use these spells in combat?

    Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can if you use the... editor. Now, whether he uses these spells in combat is up to him. :)

Virgil will gain and use black necro spells on his own once he changes his leveling scheme.

if you edit his lvling scheme he can learn anything u like as he lvls up, i know there is a game save editor out there but ive never used it before, but im sure it allows u to do somthing similar.

but just because he knows spells doesnt mean he will constantly use them, usually melee is the way NPC's go about things, however if the situation calls for it they use spells as well, also there is a .mes file somewhere that gauges the percentages of how often NPC's use spells and which ones.

That is what should happen, but it doesn't always happen. The same happens with his possessions, sometimes he loses them, sometimes he does not.

This is what DOES happen, provided he switches his leveling scheme early enough to level up into it. Obviously if you don't get Zen Virgil until he's level 45 you won't see much in the way of results.

He loses his possessions in the unpatched game, and keeps them when you're patched. It's not a random occurance.

Ahhhh, now that makes sense, i always wondered why he was touch and go with that, i assumed it was a remence from the earlier non-patched version where he reverted back to lvl 20ish. and since the newer patch made him keep his same lvl, i thought zen virgil was just 86'ed but was never fully removed. thanks for the clear up ;)

I don't really remember what exactly he changes, but isn't he supposed to have at least two degrees of Black Necro when you meet him again? That's a bit of a change...

Well, my computer could never handle the unpatched game, so for me it is a random occurrence.

Anyway, that's my experience, I didn't mean it as a general truth.

If you're patched (which you're not, but as normal people are that's always the assumption) Virgil comes back just the way he was before. IIRC he finishes white necro and then moves on to black, but I could be mistaken.

Darn useful after he learns resurrection, even for techies.

The spell is probably Fireflash found one a chest in the ancient crypt. Fireflash could damage some in your party so remove it from Virgil and discard it.

I've never got that one: when you yourself cast the fireflash spell, you don't hit anyone in your party, but if someone else does, they can hit you, right?

no, i have accidentally killed some members using the spell.
It does seem they dont complain AS MUCH when you accidently hit them tho.

I could be wrong (a couple of strong beers and shots of whiskey sort of dictates it) but I believe it all depends on your difficulty.

Yeah, well, when I play on Easy I like to hurl fireballs all over the place with no concern for my followers (who are indeed unharmed).

How ells would you keep Virgil from dieing when he gets caught in the middle of a group of ware-rats, but to fill the area with great ball so fire.
