Running Fallout?

Reading about Fallout on these forums got me interested in it, so I ordered a Fallout 1 & 2 bundle from Amazon. However, when I try to install Fallout 1 in windows, it says that this version of Windows is not supported, and won't run the install. Running the install from the command prompt (DOS) doesn't work either. Is there any way to get this working?

I'd like to try Fallout 2 since this doesn't work, but should I play Fallout 1 first?

 

What version of Windows do you have?

 

NT users can get around the installer by manually installing the game themselves. Note however that you must have at least NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3 in order to play the game. Also, Fallout should work fine but was not tested very much under NT.

NOTE: Installing under WinXP, right click the setup.exe and set the Compatibility mode to Win95/Win98 and it should install fine.

1. First, create a folder for your game called fallout (ie c:\games\fallout).
2. Copy (CDROM):\program\win\falloutw.___ to the folder you created and rename it to falloutw.exe.
3. Now you have four choices, depending on the installation size you want:

* Small Installation: Do not copy anything else.

* Medium Installation: Copy (CDROM):\master.dat (318MB) to your fallout folder (ie c:\games\fallout)

* Big Installation: Copy Copy (CDROM):\master.dat (318MB) and (CDROM):\critter.dat (150MB) to your fallout folder (ie c:\games\fallout)

* Humongous Installation: Copy Copy (CDROM):\master.dat (318MB), (CDROM):\critter.dat (150MB) and Copy the entire (CDROM):\data folder to your fallout folder (ie c:\games\fallout\data)

4. Create a text file in c:\games\fallout called fallout.cfg and add the following line to it, depending on your installation:

* Small Installation:
[system]
master_dat=(CDROM):\master.dat
critter_dat=(CDROM):\critter.dat
[sound]
music_path2=(CDROM):\data\sound\music
free_space=0


* Medium Installation:
[system]
master_dat=c:\games\fallout\master.dat
critter_dat=(CDROM):\critter.dat
[sound]
music_path2=(CDROM):\data\sound\music
free_space=0


* Big Installation:
[system]
master_dat=c:\games\fallout\master.dat
critter_dat=c:\games\fallout\critter.dat
[sound]
music_path2=(CDROM):\data\sound\music
free_space=0


* Humongous Installation:
[system]
master_dat=c:\games\fallout\master.dat
critter_dat=c:\games\fallout\critter.dat
[sound]
music_path2=c:\games\fallout\data\sound\music
free_space=0

To run Fallout 1 under XP, make a shortcut to the falloutw.exe file and right click the shortcut, and select "Properties->Compatibility" and select either Win95,98 and it should work fine..

Although the two games are not directly connected, playing Fallout 1 before Fallout 2 is reccomended to know more about the back-story. Also, Fallout 2 has some clever references to it's prequel you don't want to miss.
Finally, Fallout 1 is a great game on it's own.

I don't understand one thing, though: shouldn't the bundle have some kind of instructions for installation under Windows?

 

I only bought the jewel case with the CDs, and I only brought the discs with me to school.

I tried the above installer guide, but it says I don't have enough free space available. I changed the variable to 20, 100, 1000, etc, but nothing worked. How can I get around this?

 

So you completed the install, but the game will not run because you don't have enough space?

 

I was able to install it, but it said I didn't have enough free space on my hard drive. I figured it was reading the "free_space" variable as 0, so changed it, and it didn't do anything. The problem was that I had copied the "Installation" text (Small Installation, Medium Installation, etc), so it wasn't reading it properly. I took that out and it works now.

 

It has an illegal operation after I watch the first video now (where you walk out of the vault). Damn... Oh well.

Also, I got a perfect working version of Fallout 2 (videos and everything) from Kazaa Lite, and it ran fine on my computer, but then again, I use XP so whatever... may be I shouldn't have said anything at all. (I later bought the fallout1/2 bundle used).

 

Did you patch the game? I never had problems running the game on any OS.

 

the videos made win xp crash for me, so i always just skipped them... although that meant missing the story.

 

Anyone here play FarCry? There's a multiplayer you won't be upset with.

I reinstalled it and patched it; that did the trick.

I would skip the videos, but the game would crash after the videos, not during.

 

It's not bad, but the multiplayer puts it to shame.

I guess I'd be with rosie on this. I don't like multiplayer games as there are too many immature whiney players trying to pass for adults by misspelling "fuck" and "gay".
I preordered Guild Wars and as soon as I will get it, I'll assemble a team and venture into some gloomy jungles.
