I recently pulled my old Super Nintendo Entertainment System (or SNES for short) out of storage, found my gamebit screwdriver, opened it, cleaned it, reassembled it and then fired it up.

I currently only have MarioKart, Space Invader and Super Mario All Stars although Killer Instinct is on its way to me since my brother found it in an old box of junk and I am having a blast. My PC and PS3 have been all but retired for the last week and I am currently trawling ebay for more games.

And 2 player Space Invader is by far the greatest multiplayer experience ever created, bar none.

Ah, the SNES. Home to the best Final Fantasy game (VI, obviously), a whole bunch of seriously weird stuff, and some of the best geek experiences known to man.

    Yay for emulators.

I've been reading up on getting overseas carts to work and it seems the region lock outs are actually hardware based, all that stops american carts from fitting into our SNES is that the size and shape of the cartridges themselves differed.

I hope to overcome this and finally play a whole bunch of Final Fantasy the way it was originally intended as well as trying to find a copy of Mario RPG which according to everyone I personally know is crap but according to anonymous people on the internet is awesome.

All in all, I don't think I've ever had so much fun with a machine as I had with the SNES. There was a variety of genres in those days that puts the heavily FPS-centered present to shame. I'll never forget the nights spent trying to beat my older brother in Bomberman.

Not to mention the fact that it was the SNES that introduced me to RPG's, with titles such as Final Fantasy VI, Secret of Mana and Illusion of Gaia. I'll fucking KILL anyone who dares mentioning that those were just shallow JRPG's.

Nothing could be more true. Before PC's were common, the SNES Wildcard was also full of yayness. My cousin had like 200 SNES games on floppy disks. Good times.

What I've also realized is that old games are insanely hard compared to what you get today. Seriously, I've been stuck fighting the Samurai Dragon in Wonderboy III for months now. I've definitely lost my gamer-fu.

While emulators are awesome, there is something lost when you play a game on it. Even if you use a gamepad or something, there is something just not quite right about it.

Given the choice, I'd prefer to play on a real system.

This is not so much a problem with emulators as with PC's in general. You simply can't escape from the fact that the PC is intended to be a work machine, preferably situated at a desk somewhere with Post-it notes and paperclips abound. Consoles on the other hand are made exclusively for leisure and are optimized to be used from the comfort of one's sofa. Computers fail horribly at this because mice and keyboards just don't cut it in that otherwise so pleasant environment.

Someone must invent a solution to all this and extinguish my anguish!

The slot where the cartridge fits just needs to be altered in some way to allow American games to be played.
But god damn...I love my SNES. I've spent countless hours of my life playing Chrono Trigger, getting all the different endings, finding the best party combos to beat Spekkio at the End of Time, seeing how quickly I could hammer Lavos into dust...My greatest achievement so far is beating Lavos the first time you ever fight him in the game, and not in New Game Plus mode.
I also played the hell out of Kirby Superstar, the first three Megaman X games, and Yoshi's Island.
More recently, a friend of mine and I were playing Super Mario World while stoned and we kicked the shit out of the Awesome Levels (you know, the levels above the Star Road).
So many memories with that little grey box...

QFT. No SNES experience will ever top 4-player Bomberman. 3-player Secret of Mana comes close, though.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I believe FF 2 (in America) was far and away the best console RPG ever programmed. I may just show it a little extra favortism since it was my first console RPG that didn't include "Dragon" & "Warrior" in the title. I did like 3's (VI's) steampunk setting though.

I've always been torn between which game was better - FFIV or FFVI.

In the end I think I lean a bit more towards FFIV though I think that could be because it was the game that got me interested in RPGs, both in tabletop and video game form. I've loved Cecil's struggle between duty and justice.

I love my gamepads for the PC. I have a really high-tech one for newer games (PSU), and an old-fashioned one for older stuff like emulators. Yeeeee!

I totally need to go get Secret of Mana or something.

I just looked at the James Bond game on ebay, while I am a fan of the 64 multiplayer version DO NOT buy the SNES version. I can easily say Mario Bros will much better. And thats fucking saying something.

I was pretty young when I played Mario RPG (can't remember when, but I was under 8 and at least 6), and it was I guess my first RPG, and it was pretty epic, but probably because I was so young.

The Australian version looks like the European version, and the guy who designed the American SNES has won a ride on the Spanish Pony.

Hell, it's a tough call. However, FFVI had a shade more maturity to it and that tips the scales in its favor to me.

Also, I have a soft spot reserved for FFV. Heck, I developed an OCD getting every character to master each trade...

That retro hobby shop near my place with all the old consoles has some kind of double decker NES/SNES dual cart console. I don't remember what it was called but it was only about $50.

Every country except the US used the same version of the SNES console.
I don't even know what the purpose of that was, aside from just keeping people from importing games to America. It's one step above a language barrier, too, which leads me to believe that Nintendo of America is run by a bunch of xenophobes.
Adapters for the cartridges were advertised at the back of gaming magazines I used to have subscriptions to, but I don't know where you could find them now.

I can't recall playing on a SNES... I remember the original Nintendo, and then the Sega, but I can't recall a SNES. The two games I recall playing're Mortal Kombat and Postal. :)

Well, Postal is just good clean American fun. Gameplay was similar to Syndicate Wars but you ran solo...and all of the blood, ha ha ha!
