Couldn't make it a poll, too many characters.

If you don't already know, the original Street Fighter was the game that started off the VS fighting genre. Another Capcom game, Final Fight was the original "walk-around-and-beat-badguys" arcade game. Street Fighter was always more popular though, and now some of the characters (both good- and bad-guys) have been assimilated into SF.

In 1991 Street Fighter II stirred up an arcade craze. I remember myself buying stickers of the characters as a little boy and shouting "Ah Bugen! Ah Bugen!" when playing with friends :p. (Now I know it's "Hadoken).

Capcom decided that opportunity was too good to give up, and subsequently released Street Fighter II Turbo¹ (1992) and Super Street Fighter II Turbo². (1992)

Eventually Capcom realised that some of the gamers who had intelligence wanted a real sequel, not additional characters. They had leased out the characters to many manga and anime companies, and out of the menagerie of printed and animated spin-offs was Street Fighter II:The Movie (watta creative title), which so impressed Capcom that they took some of the ideas and produced Street Fighter Alpha (1995), also known as Street Fighter Zero in Japan. It was a prequel of Street Fighter II, which made for more creative maneuvering.

Then came Street Fighter Alpha 2 (1996,For some reason the Alpha series says "2" and not "II") and Street Fighter Alpha 3 (1998), all nice games.

There is also a Street Fighter III series, which I am not a huge fan of since all the earlier characters are gone (Well except for a few).

All votes should be based on the Street Fighter Alpha series; it's impossible to like the Street Fighter III games as character development is virtualy nil :x

¹Had access to all 12 characters
²Enter Cammy, Fei Long, Dee Jay and T.Hawk

I don't like Ryu. But it's almost by default, since most people like him . As a gameplay character I find him extremely boring - he has nothing outstanding about him at all; average range, damage, speed, etc. His costume is argh... he must have a dozen of those white gis to be able to keep 'em so clean...

His story does redeem him a bit, though the whole "fighting against your dark side" thing is a wee bit old. Plus his relationship with Ken, Sakura and Sagat..Still the most extensively-covered character by far...

Zangeiff was my favourite. I recently had Capcom vs SNK for my Cube, and it was fun playing those guys again.

I think the concepts for Stret Fighter were borrowed from a film called Fist of the North Star (mid-80s Manga).

Well, Ken did have the same master as Ryu, ya know. He wears a red gi because he knows Ryu is the better fighter, and he wants to stand out .

Akuma killed Ryu and Ken's master - who was Akuma's brother, incidentially. Their styles look alike because of this relationship. Ryu and Ken use a style popularly called "Shotokan", a toned-down version of Akuma's style, which is designed to kill (think it's called Ansastuken).

Sakura - well, she's just Ryu's number one fan . Apparently she saw him throughout the Street Fighter (1) tournament, and managed to learn his moves (or at least try to) within one year of watching him fight. Quite the wonder child.

Dan (I can't believe you called him "good", he was the weakest fighter IMO. Provides the comic relief in the game tho) uses an adulterated version of Muay Thai style, which is the same as Sagat and Adon. He "revenged" his father's death at the hands of Sagat (Sagat let him win, this pretty much tells you how skilled Dan is).

Dan seems to think that Sakura has become his student - how it came about, I don't know, since Sakura is obviously the better fighter both story- and game-wise. She tags along for the ride (to see the world) and to see if she'll meet Ryu along the way.

I absolutely hate the guy. Gameplay-wise, anyway. He's so irritating the way you hit him with all you have and he makes it up in a couple o' throws. He's a funny guy tho.

About the "North Star manga connection - well,I don't know. I got a ROM emulator which had Street Fighter (1) bundled in it. didn't impress me much. Doesn't look anything like a manga - the moves suck too.

Street Fighter II had a "real-life" feel to it, while the Alpha series has an anime touch... bigger characters too.

 Wow, you guys really take your SF deeply...

I grew up with SF II Turbo as one of the classic SNES games - nothing more. So it's based on manga, I gather?

When I played SF I chose either Ryu or the other guy that was almost like him. However I never really liked SF much. The best vs type game I played was Mortal Kombat 2 with Liu Kang being my favourite fighter. Of course when I say MK was the best I don't take Tekken or Virtua Fighter (which I only played on game machines). I'd really love to have Playstation 2 and Tekken 3 or 4. Preferably I'd like to have that huge game machine with comfy chairs, cool control console and huge screen even more than PS2.

What I would like to play nowadays is an old type "go right and kick ass" type of game. If I remember the title correctly I enjoyed Rob'n'Rumble and Battle Axe enormously (an important factor was probably the fact that I didn't have a comp on which I could play those games so my only possibility was those few hours per month at my "friend's" home). Another factor would be that enemies in R'n'R were much weaker than the character so it was rather a sadistic type of joy throwing old people around. Uhm, ok I didn't say it, I'm a reasonable, sane member of society, aren't I?

Are we talking about the same FotNS? I was talking about the original 1984 manga film that was based on some long runnning Japanese TV series. I realise the were numerous spin offs, including a console game, but they came later.

I've never been able to get the relationship between Street Fighter and FotNS clear. Was SF based on FotNS, were they based on the same series, or were similarities coincidental, arising from sharing a genre that has very strong character and plot stereotypes?

I think I have talked aboutt his before on this forum, but I'm not sure.

Eh sheriff, the moving animation is called anime. Mangas are the comix.

I've watched Fist Of The North Star. Many things could have be taken from there. But then again not. You see, fist is merely one of the animes of such type that made it out in the 80's into the european market. There were hundreds more which could have resemblem SF a whole lot more.

While it's about movies I have to tell you of my truly traumatic experience. I watched that SF movie with van Damme. Fortunately I was still a kid back then so I took it easier than I would now (my brain would probably flow out my ears during first 5 mins). Nevertheless it was terribly stupid even for a kid.

Street Fighter...hmm....My favourite characters were Zangieff and E. Honda (whatever the E stood for, I forget). The Hundred-Slaps a minute or whatever was an insanely cheap move, hence I loved it :). Beat Bison in 5 seconds flat using it once.

Mmmm.... M-Bison's 'Tornado' was a killer. Hold back, B-Forward!

I could never get any combos out with Zangief, though. Oh well, look at that pudgy, Slavic face - how can you stay mad at him?

Not according to the Manga company about us page

Before I'd ever heard the word "anime", I was a big fan of "Manga films" - films made by the company called "Manga". I don't understand how their company history appears to start in 1991, but I think the brand has been going a lot longer, or maybe they took over another company or something.

Hah! You obviously didn't read my post - caught red handed. Btw the last mk was number 4 right? I played it only once for a short while and actually considered it quite lame - definitely uncomparable with Tekken or Virtua Fighter.
