Yeah I hear about their amazing APM but all they are doing is constantly switching between groups and buildings. Also when they click order a unit somewhere they click like a million times the entire path which is useless. Not impressed.

 

Actually it's not useless, it helps to maintain both constant production and low reaction times. Spamming unit orders helps against annoying path finding bugs, but it is less important.
Sure you can get away without any kind of spamming, but don't expect miracles, you still need at least 130..150 APM to be able to play at higher levels in Starcraft, beside of course the experience, insight and execution. Similarly, don't expect to win any games without these, even if you spam 300+ APM.
