What is the "Electrical Component" item used for?

What is the "Electrical Component" item used for?

Found it in Mr. Plough's warehouse, google turned up nothing. This forum has a scavenger hunt type thread which mentions it, but its use is not discussed as far as I've been able to find.

 

It's just one of those useless curios as far as I'm aware; as it shares the same art as another electrical thingy-mabob that I can't remember the name of that is used in schematics I'd wager to say it was put in by mistake when they should have put in the other item. There is another electrical component found somewhere that is equally as useless mentioned in the scavenger hunt thread, but I'm damned if I can remember where it is now and I'm far to lazy to go through the thread and find out.

I seem to recall someone, possibly the Drog, saying these were a remnant of old programming.

Some kind of programming fossil or some such.

In any case it is certainly useless.
