7000 Hungarian forint. We're talking cubic feet, if not tesseract.

Our glorious nation accepts nothing short of the severed feet of our enemies as currency.

It's funny that you use the word, "short," as people with severed feet tend to be shorter than everyone else.

Yes, this is well known by our leaders. It is well within our intentions to conquer the world so as to fuel our economy and make us the tallest people.

But now that you know, I have to kill you. And take your feet.

That last line reminded me of the Vault Dweller and his grandchild. Is that a tear in my eye?

There was actually a very obvious falloutt reference in the game. I am not sure if there was a love quest in F1/F2 (sorry, gents, never played them), but there is this lovesick character who follows around a woman pestering her, and one of his lines mentions something about vault, and the ensuing dialogue results in the guy having no idea why he even uttered the word.

It's a shame I didn't screenshot it. Here's something to make up for that:

I recently got back into Arcanum after watching an old livestream recording of some guy playing it. I got nostalgic and so here I am again.

Other than that I discovered X-Com for the first time this year and I've enjoyed the hell out of it. I have to say though it's probably a good thing I didn't know about it as a kid. X-Com would have been way too hard for me I suspect. I'm pretty good at it now but man the learning curve on that was kind of steep.

Other than that I'd say my most played game this year was Mass Effect 2. I'm a pretty big fan of that series. Great lore I think and unlike a lot of bitter RPG fans I think ME2 was a fine RPG. Then again I have a fairly liberal view of what an RPG is. The combat improvements were great and while the writing was mostly crap, at least it was entertaining.

I've been playing Fallout 3 a lot too since it was released. It is actually my first Fallout game. I'm stuck playing it on a 360 so no mods, but it is still enjoyable. Prior to that I spent a lot of time with Mass Effect (1) and Oblivion (never played Morrowind).

I suppose Dead Rising deserves a mention too. It is actually the whole reason I bought my 360 back in 2006 (had a job then, not anymore unfortunately). I haven't been able to afford any new games this year, I only got Mass Effect 2 because a friend bought it for me since he knew how into the first game I was.

When I get the income I really want Dead Rising 2 and Fallout: New Vegas.

I also enjoy the Gears of War games.

All this talk of X-Com had motivated me to begin playing it again, but it would appear that I lost my last installation when I upgraded my operating system. That last playable installation was acquired somewhat questionably through abandonia and it would appear that it is no longer available via that particular channel.

In any event, for those of you without a hard copy, how have you gone about acquiring X-Com? I'm tempted to try Steam, but I've heard that one has to be connected to the Internet in order to play games purchased through Steam. I think I'd rather procure my next copy less-than-legitimately if that is the case.

In other X-Com news, just over a week ago I purchased what I expect to be X-Com Unplugged. I'll rope my friends into playing this game on my birthday when they are less likely to object and see how it goes. I'll report back with my findings.

I have the Steam version of X-Com, and do not have to have Steam on to play it. It's contained within DosBOX, although with settings that make it playable unlike the old abandonia version where you had to do that yourself.

Bah! Nothing puts hair on your chest faster than trying to figure out how to manage your global economy, understand firing percentages, and shoot down UFOs while still shitting your pants every time an alien pops around the corner and shoots one of your dudes when you're 9 years old.

My dad threw me headfirst into this game when I was a child (taught me how to run cd/xcom DOS commands for god's sake) and I love him for it. Made me the (incredibly geeky) man I am today.

Can't say anything about Dead Rising 2, but honestly you're probably better off waiting to pick up New Vegas. I'm playing it on a 360 too, and even with the patch they released its still horrendously glitchy. It really is a shame, because New Vegas is an amazing experience until you see radscorpions half-stuck in rocks, game-freezes whenever you enter VATS, companions that insist on entering dialogue with you every 3 steps, and getting locked out of the game's most important area unless you have a specific cowboy hat in your inventory.

Anyways, I'm currently playing New Vegas (and loving it, despite those horrible glitches), Arcanum (its what inspired to me join), and Tactics Ogre LUCT. I'm also attempting to go through Dragon Age again to finish off a few achievements, but I've been through that game enough where it becomes a chore as soon as I reach Ostagar (especially if I need to play as a Warrior til level 20 for the achievement... blech). I do enjoy Bioware games, but changing the order you can do the storyline quests does not equal replayability (especially since they're balanced to be done in a certain order). I just wish they'd give us some real choices in their games.

I suppose I was lucky but I had minimal problems on the PC.

Actually I've heard about that and come to the same conclusion. I'm quite content to wait until the game is patched better.

I haven't played Dragon Age yet, but that's another game I'd like to try sometime. I've heard good things about it and I have a friend who owns it. One day I think I'll just borrow it from him.

That said I know what you mean by tedious, especially in a Bioware game. Mass Effect is still one of my favorite games but having completed it so many times having to play it over again if I want to try importing a different Shepard gets very very tedious sometimes. It's easier to just take it in bits and pieces.

I think Bioware has lofty goals when it comes to "choices and consequences" in their games but so far I don't think they really have to nerve to add actual consequences and the technology really isn't there to have real choices.

That's another benefit of having a powerful PC, actually. It makes creating new imports for Mass Effect 2 as easy as checking off a list.

I still remember my first ethereal terror mission:

1 Avenger, 26 suits of power armor, no survivors.
