Oh! You said flag in your closet. My mistake.

Over here, gun owners are very rare, and generally a particular breed. I used to work with one. He lived with his parents (at 38yrs old), and slicked his hair back with wax. He was a developer-turned-manager and drank heavily. Very loud, but only to cover up the cracks in his ailing self-esteem. He drove a Toyota MR2 (this was a few years back) and talked about it a lot.

He was chewing the carpet when the law was changed so that he had to hand his hand-guns in. I talked to him about it (very, very carefully, trying hard not to make any sudden moves). He told me it was stupid, because he only used his three guns for target shooting. I asked him why he couldn't just use an air gun if it was for target shooting. He told me not to be ridiculous. Since he hadn't actually turned his guns in by that stage, I didn't pursue the point.

He said he couldn't understand why the law needed to be changed. I said I thought it was to do with the number of times the handguns got stolen from private owners and ended up being used in crimes and accidents. He said that he shouldn't need to hand his in because he kept them securely in a metal box. A metal box? Oh that's alright then, I said. As long as they're in a metal box, I'm sure the armed robbers wouldn't dare attempt to get their hands on them. I said this last sarcastic bit to myself, very, very quietly, after he had gone home for the day.

One of the main things that bothered me was the way he was also heavily into archery and noone seemed to have a problem with him carrying around his longbow or crossbow.

I don't understand what the whole argument about letting people carry guns is all about. They're lethal weapons. There's not a single worthwhile thing you can do with them that can't be done as easily another way. Having more of them around just makes them more accessible to criminals and accident prone people.

I realise this opinion isn't going to be welcome by gun fans. I just hope they don't have a gun to hand when they get angry. If I lose control, the most harm I'm likely to do is bore someone into a state of wishing they were dead with my rants.
