Vlad the NRA infomecial you're talking about cover the gun collections in England. All my friends and I used to like to play with guns but we all have kids now so that is done with.

Just because you have children doesn't mean you can't have guns too. You just have to be more responsible.

As for personal gun ownership, I believe that they have some pretty stiff laws about it in AussieLand too.

Responsibility only gets you so far. It is too big a risk for me to take. See the article at http://www.economist.com or a recent study of 5-14 yr olds in states with a high incedence of gun ownership to those with low gun ownership. In a year there were 253 accicental shooting deaths in high gun states in the low gun states 15. I don't think the Gov. should ban guns. I do think the parents of kids killed by their own guns should be charged with murder.

That's a good argument, but, what about the 2,000 or so children who drown in the bathtub each year?

Guns and bathtubs are not really comparable. We just had a shooting on monday a 4 yr old shot an 18 mo old with a .44 mag in the head while they were playing. It would have been nearly impossible for the 4 yr old to kill with a bathtub. I think the leading killers are cars, cancer, and guns in that order.

I think the leading cause of all deaths is second hand smoke. If you believe the commercials, then 750,000,000 children die every hour in the United States alone due to second hand smoke.

Gun control is a good topic to debate. You guys should start a seperate thread so other people know where to look if they want to join in the conversation.

A couple of mounths ago a 10 year old boy shot his cousin in the head with an AK-47. Also all of you that live in America. Do you remember the lady that drowned her 5 children in Texas?

One time, at band camp, this girl got shot in the face with a shotgun, and then she died from second hand smoke.

EDIT - In response to gamenut's edit. Yeah I remember that. Isn't the trial going on now?

If she got shot in the face with a shotgun she would be dead. Then she wouldn't be able to smoke.

Yes. I think it is still going on. Now she's claiming insanity. And how could she die from smoking if she was already dead?

She didn't die from smoking, though. It was SECOND-HAND smoke.

Because second-hand smoke is THAT deadly. It will kill you twice.

I plan not to smoke because in our science book it has a picture of a healthy lung and a picture of a lung from a person that smoked. The lung from a person that smoked looked really disgusting. My science class is that boring that I actually look at my book I am so desperate to ignore my teacher. Usually I just talk to my friends.

But see, the kicker is this: You might as well smoke, because statistically, you will die of second hand smoke anyway. We all will. In fact the entire population of the planet Earth dies every hour due to second hand smoke.

Outdoor Activities, Shooting Sports, HOCKEY!!!! Yeah, the problem I see is 'Outdoor Activities' heheh... Actually, Australia ia a pretty good hockey nation.. Of course, if you mean ICE Hockey, then you're outta luck...

Ours earn less, but yes, they screw us. They earn the same when they retire as when they were in office.

Depends on state or federal, upper house, lower house, back bencher, minister etc....

I mean, really, I *should* be the authority on this.. I DO work in a political office IN Parliament House...

Tokyo Joe's Sushi Bar, just around the corner.... Next to Hudson's Coffee. In the bottom of a building that has been wired up for high-speed net AND has 8 whole floors for lease.

Actually, I thought that the entire population of Africa starves to death every second due to world debt. They're too poor to afford cigarettes....

I would like to know where you got this information. Based on your numbers if 253 kids where accidently killed in high gun states and 15 were killed in low gun states that would make an average of 134 kids per state per year. Therefore, in an average year 6700 children are accidently shot. This is way above the actual number.

In 1999, 3,385 U.S. children and teenagers died of firearm injuries: this included 2,010 homicides (including 20 deaths due to legal intervention), 1,078 suicides, and 297 unintentional and undetermined shootings. Every day in America, an average of 9 children and youths aged 19 and younger die from gunshot wounds (6 homicides and 3 suicides).

    CDC Wonder Data

    This is from: http://www.helpnetwork.org/publications.html

Now, it also states in this same publication that from 1993 to 1995 firearms deaths were the 2nd leading cause of death among children. But, as we see in the above, "children" is used very loosely. It includes everyone aged 19 and under. Last time I checked a 19 year old wasn't a child. Either was an 18 year old for that matter. It also includes gang related shootings, but they tend not to tell you that. Considering that 2.5 million people own guns in the US and of those 2.5 million about 1.8 million have children the fact that around 1300 (I am grouping suicides and unintentional/undetermined together) may have been prevented if a gun had not been present, I would say that most American gun owners are pretty responsible.

As for the bathtub comment, I was mearly pointing out that a lot of children die from other forms of parent neglect as well and I don't see people screaming about outlawing bathtubs.

BTW, Sheriff Fatman, remember when I said I have a couple of flags in my closet. This is one of them. :wavey:

I'm actually thinking about joining a gun club, and maybe getting my own gun. I'm not sure about ownership laws though (and it's all because of that guy down in Port McArthur, what's-his-face, the guy who got off on insanity)...

Hell, I'd love to be 80, sitting on the porch of my house, beside the screen door, and when a salesman comes up to my house, I can yell inside -

"HEY MAH!. GO GIT MAH SHOTGUN!" and watch the salesman bugger off .
