What costs 20 dollars at a flea market?

An electrum hookah body. The person selling it had no idea what it was made of, and figured it was a light brass.



Since it's more along the lines of 50-55% gold, it was somewhat tarnished and I ended up polishing it. It's still damn fine, though. Now, before you ask how I know that's what it is;

It can be scratched by a piece of copper, but it can't scratch back. Copper has a hardness around 3.0 on the Mohs hardness scale, and all gold alloys are between 2.5 and 3.
On top of that, this pipe is decades old, not to mention extremely valuable. If I wasn't so determined to smoke out of it, I'd melt it down and sell the gold and silver for a pretty decent price.

Well, think about it. It was probably really tarnished and dirty. And it is just the one piece, right? You have to buy other parts for it. It probably seemed pretty damn useless to the seller

 

It was only tarnished enough to look like brass, and I'll admit that the seller probably doesn't have the same obsession with metal that I do. As far as the other parts go...I have them. All I need is a hose, and in the mean time I've got a 3 pound hookah body with a generous amount of electrum alloy surrounding a copper core and stem.
Since gold is around $8k per pound...well, you can do the math :lol: .

As long as you aren't DarkForm taking pictures of your own anatomical components, I wouldn't expect you to be. What exactly is electrum, anyway? An alloy containing a certain amount of gold?

 

Electrum is a naturally occurring alloy of gold and silver, with concentrations of anywhere between 45 to 90 percent gold, along with trace other minerals, but most likely copper as a tertiary metal. Higher concentrations of gold in the alloy will give a much richer yellow, as well as keep it from tarnishing or discoloring. It was used as a metal for minting coins before a refining process to remove the silver was invented.
The more common name for electrum is white gold. While this can be appropriate at times, there are so many variations of white gold that not all of them can be called electrum.

 

I would, but there's not really any source of hos clean enough and close enough to me to warrant that as a sound fiscal decision. It's honestly as black and white as saying,
"Either smoke from this hookah made from gold and silver or get gonorrhea."
While a lot of people have the clap, noone really needs it. I do not break the mold.

 

How much does it worth anyway ?

The melt value of the gold and silver on my hookah is somewhere around $1000. The copper is worth about $8.

Well, I've a friend who'd be really jealous... he's a huge fan of things like that, lol. He has a really nice, hand-blown glass one. It'sn't by Chihuly, but some other semi-famous fellow.

 

On the downside, there'sn't (as far as I could easily find on the first site I went to) any direct flights from Sweden to New York, meaning you go: Swede>London>New York>Penn. You're looking at 18,746.15 Kronor, or 2010.31 Euros for a one-way flight there.
