I have to agree that some redistribution of wealth will always be necessary in a civilized society, but that it's idiocy to do it without some thought behind it. More often than not, the problem is not the redistribution itself but how the money is spent. Squeezing money out of people who earned it only to hand it out indiscriminately to those who've made it their top priority in life to worry about where the next bottle of vodka is coming from is the recipe for disaster.
However, trying to help the kids in Frigo's example is a wholly different matter. A child can't be held accountable for the dumbfuckery of its parents, and if you can steer that kid away from the drug abuse and criminality they're heading towards, you will have saved the taxpayers about 15 times the money it cost to help the kid in the first place, at least if the people I heard on radio the other day are right.

However, I also agree with Fromage that it's not always obvious where to draw the line. I suppose that problems begin when public money is used as a disincentive to take any personal responsibility, not that that is much easier to define.

And here I thought this was going to be a movie review thread...

All I've heard from McCain are sob stories about people he's met during his campaigning. I haven't really heard much about his plans for if he becomes president other than a desire to stay in Iraq.

Obama I've heard a lot of what he plans to do and don't agree with a lot of it, especially the tax reforms. Just because the wealthy make more money doesn't mean that they have an obligation to pay more. He seems to be a big fan of the phrase "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need." I can never agree with redistribution of wealth.

The government's only moral course of action is maintaining public safety and insuring that the rights of its citizen's aren't infringed upon. Taxation for the sustaining of roads, an active military, education, law enforcement, and fire and rescue personnel. That's it.

All this tax code which takes up something like 66,000 pages is nothing but bullshit. Burn it all and instill a flat tax rate. Every single person who earns a pay check pays one flat percentage. Granted, this would make the poor pay less and the rich pay more, but every single person is paying an equal share of their wages. <--- that is the extent of socialism that I can stomach.

Few countries are trying to implement flat tax, especially in its purest form.

Two-bracket progressive taxation FTW, with something like 20% for the amount below x and 40% for the amount above x.

That's because I'm sneaky like that. At first, I thought about naming this thread "Dubya" but my love of ambiguity took over.

So I'mn't the only one one that had to suffer through that movie? By the gods, that's the worst piece of crap I've ever seen. I'm socialist about infrastructure, but I'm not a fan of it for social programs. In my experience, most people who get welfare checks don't use them for taking care of things because they'ven't ever been trained on how to do so. Also, I'm rather unhappy with McCain's site. He used to've an "overview" page that would tell you, in a summary, where he stood on a wide variety of issues. In my looking at it, abortion (which used to be listed), among others, is now gone completely. The page that gave the summary is gone as a whole as well. :( I was going to explain why I didn't like McCain point-by-point, but I don't've that sheet, and I'mn't going to dig through page upon page for info. I don't care about bickering that much. I dislike both of them, but I've more in common politically with Obama. My big turning issues were gay rights and abortion (plus the Iraq war, obviously).
