I just got the game and I'm loving it but I'm having troubles because it is so darn dark. Things look pretty good outdoors, but I can't see anything indoors. Miss entire quests because I didn't know there was anyone in that house. I also miss treasure and loot for the same reason. I thought a lantern would help, but that only illuminates about 1 tile. My video card is a 3dfx voodoo3 3000. I already cranked the gamma up to max(in game) the colors are bleeding with the gamma so high, and it's still too dark.
If you want to check whether there are any people/creatures in a dark room go to combat mode ("R" key) and there will be a circle around each and every person/creature. Just don't click on them in while in combat mode
I'd suggest adjusting your brightness/gamma correction... whichever one its called in Arcanum...and maybe on your monitor.
You get better results from turning up the brightness and contrast on your monitor rather than increasing the gamma. You could also undat arcanum2.dat and look in artlight for light.mes. Open light.mes in Notepad and find the line that says "disk2x2" and change it to disk5x5. Just be warned it that will increase the light radius for everything in the game that uses disk2x2.
Which might make prowling a little hard...on the flip side, ranged combat at night will be much easier .
LOL not quite Jarinor Not unless using a melee weapon is your idea of ranged combat The disk5x5 is a smaller circle of light than what the street lights use. I'm not even sure if anything besides the lights you carry use the disk2x2 sized light. The lanterns and torches in the dungeons use different art for their light so it doesn't affect them.
Every little bit helps, especially for archers and the crappy low damage bows they have to put up with...
Trust me its not that much help. The way the light fades out around the edges you have good light for two tiles around your character. It does however make the lanterns useful for actually seeing whats around which is how it should have been in the first place. Using the wrong kind of bows Jarninor. If you want to use bows go tech. More damage and lower strength. Anyway whenever/if I finish what I'm working on now I'll take a look at the magic bows. [ This Message was edited by: Otto Krupp on 2002-02-20 09:06 ]
I think not. Ellumyn's bow needs 8 or 9 strength, the long bow (which most tech bows are based on) need 11 or 12 strength...so do most of the magick bows, but the hunter's bow and Ellumyn's don't.
Compound Bow needs 8 STR does 5-18 dmg. Pyro Bow needs 10 STR does 1-10 normal plus 1-20 fire damage. Like I said less strength, more damage
The compound bow is based on the long bow. The Strength requirement isn't going to be lowered. Besides, Ellumyn's bow is the fastest in the game, and the hunter's bow is also fairly speedy.
Jarninor I hate tell you this but you are so incredibly wrong. Trust me I've used it in the game and I've looked at the proto, thats what the STR requirements are. If you have any doubts try it yourself. Base SF is 6 for the compound and 8 for the Pyro. Not the fastest but with Expert and the Pyro you're doing 4-60 a hit.
Okay, Otto, if you've got those facts to back it up, then I'll believe you. What I've always wanted to know about bows is: How the fuck does the two arrows at once thing work? I could never fire two arrows at once, and I didn't have the slightest clue on how to either. Do you have the answer?
Not only do they shoot two arrows but they only use one doing it! Actually I think the answer is pretty obvious. The actually played the game and said "You know these bows really suck." Now of course just reworking them is the obvious solution and doesn't take more than couple minute. But if you do that then you have bows doing a decent amount of damage and guns looking even weaker so then the guns would need redone. So I think they had a big pow-wow and somehow came up with the double arrow idea. Maybe they'd been watching "Hawk the Slayer" or "Robin Hood:Men in Tights" or god knows what cheesy sword and sorcery movie.
