Well, now we have THREE responses to the challenge Oyarsa set us, I thought I make a thread where we can discuss how it turned out for various people.

Thanks for giving it a go, DarkUnderlord. My reply was starting to look a bit smelly standing there on its own with no companions.

About your story: I liked the humour element. Out of interest, was it just humour that prompted your allusions to game incongruities, or was it frustration? Do you think Arcanum had more of these than usual for CRPG's?

Just a Geek, yours was too short! It was so well written and thought out I think it deserved a longer post. (I can't believe you massacred Stillwater, you fiend!)

Yeah, I know it was short. That seems to be my problem. While I'm typing it, it seems longer that it actually is when I posted it! But then again, you know, I didn't want to go through killing each individual person. That woulda just made it redundant.

Though maybe I shoulda thrown in the bit where I killed the Dodge Master too. (only AFTER he gave me master status, of couse  )
There can be only one!

I think that, all in all, we need a new proper thread. Such a thread would only allow posters you used proper correct English, etc etc etc. Quethim uses the exact same character every time (I entered the bar and saw these orcs. I went over to them. I am an elf with blah blah blah). Sorry Quethim, but using the same details and skills etc etc etc every single time (with the dwarf exception in the resurrection thread) gets boring, and isn't very good RP.

Thus, I propose a new thread - people who do not make legible, sensible posts will have their posts deleted, characters will have limitations, people will actually read other people's posts (nothing like getting other characters names wrong is there?) and the storyline shall be long and good. Unfortunately, I don't have a storyline myself. I would like to limit the thread to certain people, but then others would get offended, so I'm not going to do that.

I'm telling ya people! Whomever creates the thread needs FULL MODERATING CONTROL (over that thread)!!! Only then will I be able to do away with evil schemers! MUAHAHAHAHAH!!!!

Ahem... On a more serious side, it would be good. Then, instead of everyone bothering the moderator (Oyarsa) for removal of posts etc... The creator could do it themselves.. No mess! No fuss! I'm sure it'd only require a bit of code in the 'edit post' thing (Not that I actually know anything about how this forum works...). It could check the name of the forum (Make sure it's the RPG forum only) and check the name and password of the person who created the thread. Then, the creator can just hit 'edit post' and delete the post or alter it in any way they choose. Yes, it is risky, but if a creator starts pissing people off by changing everything, people will just stop posting there.

I know EXACTLY what you're saying! The litle box here that we type stuff in seems so small.... You fill it up so quickly that one decent sentence of story looks like a whole paragraph! It is hard to judge just how long a post is until you actually post it.

I must confess, my experience with CRPGS is somewhat limited, most of them I find seem to be little more than hack 'n slashes *cough* Baldur's Gate *cough*. So I can't make any comparison. But... It was frustration rather than humour.

The bit about the weather, that was jogged constantly by the weather reports in the Tarant newspapers. I thought it might rain or snow one day. Not a big disappointment, and I'm sure the weather reports where there as a bit of sarcastic fun by one of the designers

As for the hoarding of junk... I did find that frustrating.. I knew in my heart that I'd never need it all but it wasn't until much later in the game that I decided to ignore collecting it. One thing that always annoyed me was that I never found the flamethrower schematics. I KNEW there was a flamethrower in the game, but I never found it. Most of the other weapons as well seemed to be 'missing'. And I never did use that 'auto loading chamber'... While I'm at it, I thought it rather odd that the fine pistol was made with a revolver chamber and a small tube, rather than the obvious gun chasis and revolver chamber conmbination.

Moving on to identifying things... The only unidentified dagger in the game is the 'Dagger of speed'. I could always tell when I got one of those... Also, it was annoying that, as usual, the person to identify things is hiding on the outskirts of town *cough* Like Diablo *cough* and as such, requires a significant walk to get there. So much so, that I eventually didn't bother about things in the end, I just sold them for the lousy 100 coins and was done with it.

As for the rest? That fight pissed me off rightly. I so badly wanted to start the revolution but every time I tried, for some reason, ALL my companions started attacking the people I was helping and then attacked me afterwards because I was attacking the guards. As well as attakcing the guards themselves!! I mean, who's side were they on?? Yes, like you with your chickens, I found the NPC's to be damned annoying and took the opportunity to kill them... But I needed them at that stage in the game as I was only about a level 23. Well, plus that and I didn't want to 'ruin' the rest of the game by wiping out Tarant... Right now, when I have time, I play a bit and I'm just going through as an Orc killing everyone so I can actually DO the whole revolution thing!! Viva La Revolution!

(That is the beauty of Arcanum, replay value... When you're not busy modding..)

The only other thing I'll say (I think this is a long post, I can't tell) is that the Looking Glass rifle was THE most powerful weapon in the pre-patched version of Arcanum. 40-40 damage and a nice high speed. The elephant gun was only 20-30 at the time. It was a lucky thing that I patched Arcanum AFTER I'd finished

DU, you made a couple of mistakes - the speed of the LGR has never changed. It's always been 1, unless you were a firearms apprentice, in which case it was 6.

To get access to more schematics, simply move a couple of screens away from the store which supplies them, rest one or two days, then go back. New schematics all round!

That said, there are some extremely rare schematics. For instance, I found the mechanized plate mail once, but I forget where - it's ironic that I found it first time through isn' it? The flamethrower is fairly hard to come across, as are the detontator and plastique schematics - the former I saw only once in a shop, the latter 3 times.

Several of the items in the gun shop that you never used were used in found/bought schematics - the mechanised rifle used the auto-loading chamber, the gun chassis was used in making the long range pistol and there were a variety of other things that were only used in such a fashion.

Oh, okay. Thought they'd slowed it down.

That's my point. I only found that out on a forum after I'd finished. There's no quest for them and they ARE incredibly rare. Like, really, really, really rare. Everyone has these damn Auto Loading Chambers, but no-one had schematics for them.

I would've preffered a quest for the flame thrower, or have the schematics AT LEAST show up once in a store. I went through the whole game, always checking the stores and never found most of them.

Yeah, I know what you mean, Jar. Not saying that I always use proper english and such (I know that I have a tendancy to just type out how I talk. You know, words that technically don't exist, but when you sound it out, it can still be understood what is being said).

But anyway, getting back to the point. It's like that saying goes. "You can please some of the people all of the time, and you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time."

I know people are going to make mistakes. No one is perfect when it comes to RPing. No one is entirely right. But as long as those that keep screwing up royally are willing to learn, and change, then its all good.

And I would propose and idea for that new thread as well, but I am out of ideas too. Always have ideas for characters, but never for a story. Oh the irony of it all. :shootme:

EDIT: (Hit the post button too soon. Arg!)

DU: I am not just talking about the boxes here. I've put up some roleplaying posts on a couple boards I visit hosted by Network54 and HotBoards. The boxes there are smaller too!

Its not that easy to make it where the maker of the thread can just delete posts. the is php and I am a mod of a php forum. Its for my SC clan though. But from now on I will change my characters from elves(elves are the coolest characters).Mabye I should try my least favorite creature and orc. and my least favorite skill strengh.

Queth, I don't believe you could have said something to surpise me more than this.

BTW, any chance you'll be signing up for World of Warcraft when it comes out? I'm planning to, and it'd be cool to meet some people from TA in there.

DarkUnderlord, I agree with almost all of your comments about things in Arcanum that frustrated you. I noticed most of them myself. I suppose my years of CRPG (and RPG!) involvement have given me a philosophical attitude to them.

Jar, maybe we should give some thought to a storyline for a quality-posts-only thread.

Some questions about the parameters of the story (to everyone):
    • Does it need to be based on Arcanum?
    • If so:
      • Are the potential players in the mood for magic, tempted by tech or ambivalent?
      • Are we gunning to be questing heroes or marauding villains?
    • If not:
      • Does anyone have strong preferences of genre (fantasy over sci-fi, etc)
      • Is there an existing fantasy/sci-fi world we all like (Feist's Midkema, Wolfe's Urth, etc.)
    • I may not have time to post much to the thread for a while. If I wanna give making a storyline a try, would people rather I wait until I also have the time to post, or would you be happy for me to create it and others play it (maybe with Jar/Oyarsa arbitrating it if they'd be willing)?

This is just a suggestion, based on what Jar and JaG said. If you think I have my fat head stuck up my fatter behind, feel free to hurl abuse.

    *raises shield*

    *peeks over top, quivering*

Fatman, chances are I'll be signing up for World of Warcraft. I just hope it isn't infected with morons, and is actually proper roleplaying. If it's roleplaying is limited to D2 style, then I won't be playing.

As for the story, I'd be prepared to wait - if you're going to do something, it's worth doing well. I'd prefer for a story to be set in Arcanum myself.

    • 1) I think based *loosely* on Arcanum would be a good idea, that way we all know the weapons/spells etc.. That we can use. Plus we already have a background setting and so on.... So we all know where we stand.

      2) I'm a techie. I think a thread/story with both would be better than sticking to one or the other.

      3) Villian or hero?? It'll depend on the story for me.... (although at the moment, I'm apparently gunning to be a drag queen  )

I don't have much time to post personally either... It's only been the last week that I've really had the time to do so... (Alone, in the office.. No one else around.... All work done... Election over... Hmmmm, I think it's time to surf.....)

But then again, I'll have the ocassional spare moment or two... I think you should start the story, and we'll all see what happens from there.....
