Well since there was no good backgrounds for thieves...I made one: Elvin rouge +1 strength +4 dexterity +3 Perception -4 Charisma -4 Consituntion -1 healrate (this really sucks) -10 max fatigue 1 rank of prowling, 2 of pick poket, half ranks of persuade and haggle. I think added a bit to spot rap as well... anyway, by the time she was level 20 she was exert on every thieving skill... In a effort to get to caladon for master traing on thieve skills... I decide to brave the gorgon pass (sp?) with my wimpy level 18 theif.... well, I didn't really think that prowl was all that effective, untill I passed 2 character lengths from several enemys in broad daylight and didn't get caught...I did kill some moutains apes for XP... I made it through (took several trys to prowl past the near psychic ore golems and wraiths) and got to caladon (since I've never made it through the isle of dispare quest before...I'm now totally lost story wise ). Here is the things I've descovered about prowling.... 1. Good prowling and you can sneak past darn near anything. 2. Prowling GREATLY inhances back stab. expert in melee, backstab and prowling, and you can bring the pain 3. YOU CAN TRAVEL IN PROWL MODE. I about had a fit when I found this out... I forgot to leave prowl mode when I made it through the pass...the next random encounter I met, they didn't know I was there !!!!! I could dance around them and they were non the wiser. Isn't this a bit unbalanced? I mean theives arn't very sturdy, and kinda suck melee when you HAVE to do a frontal assault (I died a few times to the gnome at shrouded hills at the bridge because the angle he can at be I couldn't get behind him...), but the prowl backstab thing is just evil.....
I've never actually had master training for prowl, but I agree. It absolutely pwns! Backstab + prowl = happy times.
Woah :-o NobleKnight thats one hell of a background  ! But wouldn't the game be little bit too easy from the start ? :/ Anyhow ... its still quite a good background and as Langolier said Backstab + Prowl = Happy times
Well it's only for elves and to start they'll get like 15 fatigue an heal rate one. At level 25, it takes me 4 days of sleep to heal half damage...and I don't have that many hit points... If it wasn't for pickpocketing healing salves and fatigue restore, I'd never have gotten out of shrouded hills...
It seems pretty well rounded to me. Those bonuses are awesome, but that -1 heal rate has gotta stink.
Mainly I've always chosen to be a Gnome, because of the reaction bonus. When you use charm, then cancel, it leaves +10 reaction, continuously. Forgive my spelling.
I have a Kleptomaniac background that you might like. My son and I designed this one together. You simply cannot resist the urge to take others' belongings, so you work to become a master thief. As a result, you have honed your skills at picking pockets (+8/4), picking locks (+8/4) and prowling (+8/4), but the urge to steal can be so strong that it overcomes your caution and results in a penalty to spot traps (-4/4) and disarm traps (-4/4). You are more nimble and have increased your dexterity (+1) and perception (+1), but your willpower is much lower (-3). You start with 800 gold and a set of lockpicks, dressed like a country rube, i.e. rustic suit or dress. This background is available to all races and genders.
That's a good backgrund Sinbad! Would work wonders with any thieving character. ...could you just please just clarify to me what those (8/4) numbers mean? Does that equal two points spent or am I completely out of the picture? :/
8/4 = 2 CPs. Dead right on that guess. The Oiled thieves' leather gives a 1/4 bonus to 3 skills. The Helm of Yacazar's Cost gives ++ to bow or 2/4.
Good background...my background was a rogue, not a pure thief. Might make a assassin next (all about the backstab/prowling. How do you get spesific items?
To get specific items, you put the prototype numbers, separated by a space on the fourth line of the background definition in the backgrnd.mes file. You can see where this has been done if you look at the child of a hero background. The background gives you an enchanted sword, prototype 6042. You can look up the prototype numbers in description.mes or you can use DJ Unique's prototype lookup utility in his script editor, but it doesn't always find all items - it didn't find a rustic dress for me. I had to make four different entries for the same background to allow all the different possible race/gender combinations that currently exist to be able to use the background, so there are drawbacks to adding specific items if they are also size-specific. :-o
