    I believe it isn't a corruption. Originally the homosexual was seen as utterly camp and thus the epitome of 'gay' behaviour. The word gay has been associated with such people and it is applied to all homosexuals now, whether they are camp (and thus exhibit truly 'gay' behaviour) or not.
