I'm having some trouble with the thieves tools, the ones you find on the ground outside the Moathouse. First, I spent 100 gold to identify them and I'm still not getting any additional information, which is really ticking me off. Is this a bug? Shift-click does nothing. Second, how do the tools work? Do they just give me a bonus to things like pick lock and disable device when I have them equiped, or do I need to actually use them on something?
You can always check to see the rolls Canis. All the bonuses and penalties are displayed. And they are used automatically whenever you picklock. As a tip, I can tell you that a barman in Nulb (near the shipyard) sells masterwork picklocks which give you a nifty bonus.
