Yes, and it's a great invention, but I was specifically talking about beheading with the sword or axe. More picturesque.

Is that the one where it missed her head and snagged on her jaw? If I remember correctly, they had to stand on the blade to make it get threw.

I remember when I isited the Tower Of London there was a tour guide that told us about a certain noble women, which i forget the name of, but anyway, she refused to put her head on the chopping block because she claimed she was innocent, so the executioner wound up chasing her around hacking at her until she finally died, or passed out and died, or whatever.

    Pretty insane.

They also showed us this little area where the river ran into a gated area of the tower where they used to drown people.

Personally I think the Iron Maiden would be one of the worst ways to go.

Oh god, the Iron Maiden is a brutal piece of machinery. I wonder how long it would take to die in one? Medieval Europe was great for torture implements. How about the pear? It was a metal pear (obviously), designed in sections with each section having razor-sharp edges. When a key was twisted, the sections would expand outward. So, they would shove the pear into whatever orifice was expedient, and then twist the key, expanding the bladed sections into the flesh, ripping the anus/mouth/vagina apart. Pretty nasty.

Hmm...I've read other places that it took several strokes to take her head off. On a similar note, Edward the Second of England (son of Longshanks of Braveheart fame) was executed in one of the nastiest ways I've ever heard of. They shoved a metal tube up his rectum, and then pushed a red-hot poker through the tube, slowly, until he died. Supposedly his screams could be heard for a mile around the Tower of London. The tube was inserted first to leave no marks on the body, so it couldn't be proven that there was foul play. Everyone thought the execution method a great joke, because Edward II was gay.

I heard that one form of torture was to shove hollow pole up their ass and make a rat go up it...

One of the reasons why beheading could take several cuts before the convict died was the simple fact that the executioner usually was drunk. Guess it can't be easy if you don't know which neck to aim at.

I've also heard about hollow belts, with the only way out at the gut. The rat would then eat itself out. Pretty nasty. Just like Alien, only backwards.
