I rarely pay attention to the newspapers in Tarant. Do they actually lead to other quests or are they there for more of an aesthetic value? I know the Art Thief quest is mentioned in headlines, but others seem to just point out random events with nothing in the game to back them up.
Your actions in the game may sometimes be noted in the news as well. That would count for the game backing it up wouldn't it?
I'll have to keep an eye out for that then. I just remember reading an article about a professor that died and his associate's name was Dr Such-and-Such and was a suspect to the crime. So I figured I could look him up in the Tarant Archives, but I guess only names of people relative to certain quests are listed there. Hence, I concluded that the newspapers didn't nudge you in the direction of other quests, but were just there as an amusing novelty.
The first time or two I played I didn't realize Spoiler the labor strike was significant: follow it up.
If nothing else I just like reading the paper to read up on the lore. One thing i regret doing the last time I played was just breezing through the quests without reading them or participating in the lore. Esp since there is so much to do, I think that one great play strategy is to just do as much as you can in every zone taking in all of the little bits of lore as you go.
Spoiler One way to solve the tax collection from Blackroot is to pick up the newspaper in Dernholm concerning the upcoming war between the UK and Arland
